Carolina Wings & Rib House, 600 Gervais Street: 9 December 2012 16 comments
The Carolina Wings at the corner of Gervais & Pulaski is the latest location of this local chain to close. (You can see other stores here, and here).
There was an article in The State about it. I didn't save the link, but the gist as I recall it was that the chain went into bankruptcy, and that as part of their reorganization to come out of it, they were closing stores where the rent was too high and the margin too low to make sense in their current status.
As of a few weeks ago, at least, their Pawleys Island location (really Litchfield, but everybody tries to say they're Pawleys nowadays..) was still open, so they still do have a bit of a non-Midlands presence.

UPDATE 20 April 2020: This builiding is now breastaurant Twin Peaks. Also, adding tags and map icon.

Hmm Maybe the high rent is what keeps killing restaurants in this building. Seems like a great location with a big parking lot. The food wasn't that great, but no worse than a lot of greasy bar food type places.

Wow, I'm actually kind of sad. I had my first "legal" drink here by chance on March 26th 2004, it was a coors light in a glass with a orange slice (for whatever reason). Went there about 2 or 3 times afterwards over the years....:(

This location was as good (or bad) as the rest of the Carolina Wings but I liked it because if someone wanted to meet in the Vista then you could meet there and not have to worry about parking.

So how many are left in the Columbia area now? I think there are just too many wing joints around time that they cannot sustain themselves.
BTW - does anyone know if anything is in the building that use to house Headliner's and all of the myriad of other clubs that have been in and out of there over the years?

According to their website, there are six locations. Clemson Rd, Lexington, Cayce, Blythewood and Red Bank in the Columbia area and the location at Litchfield/Pawleys.
The newer locations that I have been to seem to be smaller. I think they are moving away from the large Sports Bar type atmosphere into casual dining.
That being said, last time I was at the Lexington location, they started up the trivia contest while we were trying to eat and it made it hard to talk with the people we met for dinner.

I think the "Cayce" location is the Fish Hatchery Road location, but I don't know if it's still open.

The Cayce location is listed to be at 2423 Fish Hatchery Rd. so I think it's still running...

tonkatoy, it isn't in Cayce Crossing itself. The shoppes building that features Carolina Wings is across the street from the Fish Hatchery entrance to Cayce Crossing.

I ate there a few times. They had a nice salad bar until they decided to close it. They had the hottest wings on the planet, called the Suicide Wings. You had to sign a waiver to eat them. I tortured myself eating them. The next morning was torture too!
You would think that the location is prime in the heart of the Vista. I have no idea what the rent was but it must have been high enough to cause second thoughts about the location, especially during a bankruptsy proceeding.

Went here once with a group from class. The food was OK but I recall the beer not being cold. I wasn't put off by the experience but not impressed enough to ever go back.
