Winn Dixie, 7049 Parklane Road: Late 1990s   8 comments

Posted at 2:30 am in Uncategorized

This building, now a Marshall's can't really be considered as a Columbia Mall outparcel store because it predates the mall. It was definitely a grocery, and I'm pretty sure it was Winn Dixie. We went there only very rarely, since we considered the area to be something of a boondocks and a long way from our house. Of course this was a time when a "long distance" phone call was something you saved for special occasions, and the area now seems quite close to me even though I live in the same place.

I'm not sure why the place failed to thrive after Columbia Mall went up -- on the surface that seems like it would have driven more traffic, but apparently not. I'm pretty sure that Winn Dixie moved out of here before coming back to the area with the ill fated Decker store in the 1990s. After that, a number of things went in -- I think it was a party shop at one time, but Marshall's has been there for several years now.

UPDATE: Updated the date in the post title from "1970s" to "Late 1990s" since commenters recall this store being open until the Decker store opened.

  2. I agree. I think this location was still open as late as '98, which is about when the Decker location opened.

  3. Huh. OK, I'll update from "1970s". It's just that I recall the Decker opening as being more of a big deal than "We've moved!" -- they mailed out videotapes to the whole area.

  4. This was an outparcel of the mall. The three stoes (W-D), Sportsman Hardware and a dry cleaners were in a strip mall called Dents Plaza (Yogi Bear Honey Fried Chicken was there too,) originaly facing Two Notch near where the sports bar is now. The three made a deal with the mall in the 1970s to relocate to Parklane so the area they were in could be converted to mall parking. They signed a 20 year lease starting in 1977, which for one reason or another was not renewed in 1997.

  5. haha I remember those video tapes. There may have been a short time where the one store was closed before the new one opened. I don't think it could have been more than a few months though. I do recall going into that Marshalls in '98, so it's been there for a while.

  8. This Winn Dixie was built here during construction of Columbia Mall and became an out parcel of mall, they were located on Two Notch, moved here. I remember during construction of this Winn Dixie, storm came through and knocked down the right side of building, no roof on it yet..... they had to rebuild.
