Correll's Body Shop, South Bolton Street: 1990s(?) 20 comments
This burned out body shop sits in an odd little area that I really knew nothing about. I noticed it the other week when I was getting onto I-77 West-bound from Garners Ferry Road. The area is rather industrial, with a transformer substation and nearby rail-spur, and must have been, I think, radically different before I-77 was pushed through. I'm saying "South Bolton Street" based on mapquest -- I couldn't actually see any name on the little spur leading from Planters Drive to this building, and if it's really a public street, it's a pretty forgotten one at least for any maintenance crews.
In particular, there's Veteran's Road and Old Veterans Road which must have been re-routed at that time. I also suspect that there was another road where the I-77 on-ramp is now that ran in front of the building, as the name is painted on the side which is not currently accessible by road. As for what that name is exactly, I can't say. I thought I could read it from the on-ramp, but I can't recall what I thought I saw, and the picture I took from there turned out quite poorly as far as being able to make out those letters. The "Body Shop" is clear enough, but for the first part I can only get "c-o-r-r-e-something-something".
I'm just guessing as to the time-frame for the closing. Certainly it's been long enough for the exposed interior to be pretty thoroughly tagged with graffitti.
UPDATE 28 March 2011: I've added the name "Correll's" based on the comments.

I thought Marion-Burnside dealership was at 7201 on the Sumter Hiway..I dont remember it being on Garners Ferry, and I dont ever remember Dairy Queen being at what's now the underpass to 77. I also thought where Marion Burnside was/is, there used to be a drive-in across the street from it also..along with some old Plantation house, where I think the man's wife killed herself or something like that on the front porch?

Eric, you are absolutely right. That was Correll's. When I-77 came through Burnside Drive and Planters Drive got dead-ended. Funny how time blends things together. And Del, Sumter Highway (378) and Garners Ferry Road are one and the same. Near the underpass there was a one hour dry cleaning business, a Dairy Queen and a Standard Federal Savings & Loan. I think at one time there may have been a BBQ restaurant there, also.

Yea, I towed enough frame repair jobs from and back to them over the years. I think it was closed just prior to 1990 though.

So if Garners Ferry and Sumter Hiway are the same, then where is/was Marion Burnside? or where is 7201? I always thought that Marion Burnside was further up the road past where Bi-Lo is and closer to Sumter..

7201 is the current address for Jim Hudson (formerly Moore-Hudson). For the longest time they sold Oldsmobiles and GMC trucks, and had a guy who did lots for radio spots for the Carolina Olds Network (at Moore-HUDSON! Oldsmobile). I don't know what he sells there now.

Yeah, Del, it IS the same building as Burnsides.
When I was in HS, a GT6 was planted in front of Correll's for years. I had a serious jones for those cars.

I think what's throwin' me off is that I really dont remember what that entire area looked like before 77 was built and everything was re-arranged around there. I think this was back in the late 60's somewhere around '67 or '68 that I remember the commercial for them...but back then, before the hiway, that was a LONG drive from Cayce.

Yeah, they rearranged a lot of stuff for 77. There used to be a heavy equipment junkyard of Veterans that is now some sort of strip mall. And True's junkyard is now landmark square.
That rail spur was for loading stuff for Fort Jackson.

True's used to have old Mac truck cabs with the bulldog on the hood, half tracks and all kinds of amphibious equipment used in WWII. They also had some mean dogs inside that fence.
Next door on Garners Ferry was a PayLess gas station that sold gas for 23.9 cents per gallon. Marion Burnside Plymouth sold some awesome muscle cars that drank that gas. That intersection of Garners Ferry and Leesburg was the last traffic light until you reached Sumter and a lot of racing took place on the highway.

I remember the Superbirds on the lot and how cool I thought they looked (I was five). I wanted Dad to buy one.
I thought the light at the AP at Garner's Ferry and Greenlawn was the last light...least it was while I've been alive. My uncle used to tell me that it wasn't uncommon for two cars to make a high speed dash Columbia--->Sumter in the wee small hours of the morning.

I believe that was Burnside Drive that ran adjacent to Marion Burnside Chrysler/Plymouth. Before I-77 was built and the entire Garners Ferry Road/Leesburg Road intersection was revamped, Burnside Drive connected with Garners Ferry. That body shop was probably a part of the dealership. A lot of good muscle cars ended up there. Back then cars were built tough and a lot of times after a mean wreck all they had to do was hose the blood off the dashboard and put a 'For Sale' sign in the window. Ready to roll again.
