Fat Boy, 3260 Augusta Road: September 2018 10 comments
I never got a chance to eat at Fat Boy in Woodberry Plaza as it is badly located for me, but I did make a note to do it if I were ever in the area at the right time: I love a good Greek salad, and you have to respect the moxie of a place that puts "Fat" in their branding.
The state of the place is a bit odd: The insides are still fully intact and ready to serve tomorrow's customers, there is a Now Hiring sign out front, and there is no closing note on the door, yet there is already a real estate sign on the building and lot. I hope the place remains a restaurant of some sort, and not another title loan operation.

If I had known Joe was running this place, I would have given it a try. Spend many a Tuesday night at the Big Bird enjoying the $1.25 special.....two pieces of chicken, fries and tea. It was perfect for sating the aftereffects of porch parties!

I used to frequent this place about 30 years ago. So, it was a different owner and long before they added Greek to the menu.
What hooked me on Fat Boy then was their fried gizzards. For just $2 you got a standard paper basket full and they were delicious.JohnR

I'm going to miss this place. They had the absolute best banana milkshakes sides of Zesto's. An entire banana blended up nice and smooth with the richest vanilla ice cream.

I only had a chance to eat there once. The pork kabobs, rice and salad were great. A friend of mine loved the gyros. Years ago when my Dad worked at Columbia Lumber he would eat there quite often for lunch. He used to rave about the chicken and gizzards.

I stop going to this place about 20 years ago. After getting a few bad premade milkshakes not fresh ones. I stopped. My mon and dad quit going after getting rotten cole slaw. This place use to be the place to go besides zestos. But not in a long time.

@Andrew Nick's as in Nick's House of Pizza? Are they moving from their Hwy 378 location? Always liked their souvlaki and the country pasta.

Based on a writeup I saw in The State, my impression is that the Nick's due to open up here is along the lines of Nick's Gyros & Subs (of which we have several locations around) (which is different than the Nick's House of Pizza that kkaos was asking about)...

My husband and I were running errands in West Columbia today and decided to have a late lunch at FatBoy. We were surprised to find out FatBoy had been replaced by Nick's! We had lunch at Nick's and it was pretty good. We didn't realize FatBoy had been closed for three years!

I stopped at Fat Boys for a Greek salad about 5 years ago. There was a familiar face behind the counter that I couldn’t quite place. So I asked him where I could have known him from. This was Fat Boys owner, and he used to operate the Big Bird on Main St at USC across from the Towers ‘Honeycombs’ dormitories. Plenty of good times in the mid to late 80’s eating broasted chicken and Greek salad in that place. What a blast from the past to see his face! I hope he is doing ok. I really enjoyed his food and the pitchers of beer in the Downstairs Plaza (DSP).
