Putt-Putt Fun Center, 105 Sparkleberry Lane (near Clemson Road): 2007   24 comments

Posted at 5:02 pm in closing

Well it seems I always get around to taking pictures of Putt-Putt locations too late. This location on Clemson Road only lasted a few years, and was completely torn up before I got around to going out there.

If I recall correctly, they had a go-kart track which was out in the area with the fire-extinguishers on the light poles. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe the actual "building" part of the "fun center" might still be standing. There is a building in the back of the area which now seems to be a welding school, but the shape of the back of it makes me think it might have been designed for a lot of in-and-out traffic to the golf course and race track.

It looks like we are to get another Interstate hotel here, which is kind of a shame, as Columbia has lots of hotels, but at this point, no minature golf courses. Or am I wrong about that? Come to think about it, the only actual working "Putt Putt" brand course I can think of is this one at the base of Atlantic Avenue in Fernandina Beach:

UPDATE 25 June 2010: Added full street address to post title. The place was actualy officially on Sparkleberry Lane, not Clemson Road as I had thought.

UPDATE 19 March 2013: Well, for whatever reason, the Wingate Inn never happened, and now, 5 years later, the parcel is still for sale:

UPDATE 9 August 2017 -- It looks like this parcel has finally, for real this time, been sold to be the new home for nearby Frank's Carwash:

  1. There is miniature golf at Frankie's Fun Park, but that's all I can think of...

  2. There is also a mini golf course in Hilton at the driving range.

  3. I remember that there used to be a Putt-Putt on St. Andrew's Road, across from the $1.50 movie theater. I recall going to a few friends' birthday parties there when I was young.

  4. There were at least three Putt-Putts in the Columbia area in the 1970s, Percival Road near Forest Drive (believe it or not, that once was a nice area), St. Andrews Road and Knox Abbott Dr.

Putt-Putt was once a very strong and viable company with locations all across the country.

  5. Where was the one on Knox Abbott? There was also one on Devine st where the bi-lo is now.

  6. It was near the intersection with 12th avenue. Some auto service place is now on the site.

  7. I remember, when this place first opened, going in and thinking "this is really half-a$$ed and won't last." The benchmark for comparison was definitely Frankie's Fun Park.

  8. I moved to NE Richland about a month after this place closed, and I was pretty sad about that. I remember driving around the parking lot trying to figure out their hours when someone at the bank next door flagged me down and told me it was closed for good.

I love places like this, and to have to drive all the way to Irmo to go to Frankie's is almost not worth the trouble. It's a shame that we've only got that one in Columbia anymore.

  9. My husband worked here for a while PT... they ended up cutting his hours down so much he had to find another PART-TIME job! He won first place during their DDR competition tho... that's our favorite memory... that and how I would always hit the jackpots on the ticket games.. LOL!

  10. This place was never that great. Always FAR inferior to Frankie's Fun Park. The games were awful, and the prices were way too high for something like 2 mins of go-cart time in slow carts- with a track that's no fun to ride on. I'd assume some investors lost a lot of money on this deal. It was hardly open at all- only in the warm weather season for perhaps 2 years-- I believe. No way they made any money on this place

  11. The Slut Putt, er, Putt Putt on Knox Abbott
was across from where the Krispy Kreme is now.

I had a birthday party there in '79.

There wasn't a Putt Putt but a Putt-A-Round(PAR)on Greenlawn Drive near Garners Ferry around '81. There is a day care and rental store on the site now.

  12. There was a Putt Putt about where the (now empty) Hollywood Video building is near the intersection of Devine St. and Jackson Blvd. It closed and was demolished around 1990 to make way for that mall, along with the Swamp Fox Inn, Hardee's, and a very old big house that had an animal clinic in it.

  13. That section of Devine Street was also the home of Pizza Hut, Brewmasters, A&W Rootbeer, some batting cages and a Gene's Pig 'n Chick. Dennis, I don't believe there was a Hardee's at this location. Hardee's was where the Egg Roll Station is today.

  14. I dont remember Gene's Pig n Chick, where did it sit?.. I do remember the Putt Putt being there though during the 80's. I dont remember the A&W..where was it? I do remember the one at Beltline/TwoNotch Road, and remember when it burned to the ground.

  15. The Knox Abbot Putt Putt sat where the Nappa Auto place is now.. it sits on the same site. It was there since the early 60's and closed I think back in the 70's or very early 80's. There also used to be a small Putt Putt type place behind the Mobile Gas Station next to McDonalds on Broad River.. The McDonalds that sits there now is the 2nd or 3rd re-incarnation of the original built in the early 70's. But Mobile Gas Station was almost in the same lot just beside it, and right behind the Mobile Station was a small Putt Putt/Wacky Golf place.. that was the mid 70's.

  16. I remember the Putt-Putt on Knox Abbott everyone is talking about (back in the 60's and 70's when I was a kid). Believe it or not, there was an even older Putt-Putt on the same road prior to that. It was closer to Columbia, more or less across the street from where B-C High School property is now. By the mid 1960's all that was left was the wood siding of the layouts.

  17. There is a wonderful 18 hole mini golf in West Columbia. 3209 Charleston Highway. It is open and doing well. They have a website http://www.palmettofallsminigolf.com.

  19. There is still a Putt-Putt Golf and Games in Rome, GA. But not nearly as nice as the one on St Andrew Rd.

  21. There was a Put Put on St. Andrews Rd. back in the 80's... I went to a bday party there when I was in the 5th grade. It was torn down several years ago. I think the free-standing Dollar General is the old lot... There was also a Quincy's or Ryan's next door, or a couple storefronts down, during that time.
