Well, that didn't last too long.

Spunky's Auto Sales was the follow-on operation to Prestige Hitech Autowerks which moved down the street into the old Dick Dyer bodyshop. They opened sometime last fall (the picture I have is from October 2013) and lasted, I'm thinking, until last month (April 2014).

I continue to like the gull-wing lights at these old service stations. The roofline is nice too.

UPDATE 20 November 2015 -- This place has been extensively remodeled and is to become a gas station:

UPDATE 14 March 2016 -- Almost ready to open as King Fuel. It appears the store only needs to be stocked:

  1. Spunky's, interesting name. When I think of Spunk, it ain't got nothing to do with auto sales. I worked in the building right next door to this business, which was Rogers Car Stereo, from 1981 to 1983.
Before it was Spunky's, back in the 80's it was a glass business, windshields etc. Then it was The Muffler Works. The Muffler Works was owned by a Guy named Mark that I met when I went into business for myself in Five Points. He started out working for Kenny's Auto Supply in Five Points when Kenny's was in the old Grocery Store building. Kenny had a muffler shop in the rear of his business. Mark married a girl that her father owned the Zesto's in 5-points, not to be confused with his cousin or brother that owns the Zestos in Triangle center in West Columbia.
Mark eventually broke out on his own, as I did in the car stereo business, and opened his first store at this location (Spunky's). It was nice having a buddy that owned a muffler shop right next door to where I worked due to the Hot Rods I was into at the time.
I couple of years later he had a new building built on Garners Ferry Road just past Greenlawn Cemetery next door to the Rush's Fast Food joint. He was there for a while, I lost contact with him and Muffler works closed at the Spunky's location and on Garners Ferry. Now there is a Brakes for Less in the Garners Ferry Road building. Rogers Stereo eventually closed as well as my stereo shops. Hard to compete with Wal-Mart and at the same time, the price of electronic equipment, car stereos in particular dropped like a lead brick.

  2. I'm sure some Brits would get a chuckle out of the name, as it has its own meaning across the pond. :D

  3. Old Shell standard design station. It used to be you could tell which franchise it was by the station design. Now, not so much.

It still irks me to see the old model-BP's turned into Circle K's. Columbia was a test market for BP's attempts to port what they were doing in the UK over to the U.S. The buildings were all prefab.

Back in the day, their sandwiches were pretty good. Chains like Sheetz and Wawa have taken the idea to a totally different level.

  4. @Steve-I'm a little confused. Who had the sandwiches that were pretty good? And I have never heard of Sheetz or Wawa. Are they a chain around here (Columbia) somewhere?

  5. @Rick - I was hesitant to make a Spunky's comment. Glad to know you were there to take up the slack!! Plues I don't think I would want to eat anything from a place called Sheetz. Sounds like something to take after eating another McMeal at Mickey D's......

  6. Sheetz is good. And not just good for a gas station, it would be legitimately good as a standalone deli. They haven't made their way down here yet, though I think there's a couple up in the northern part of the state.
