Blockbuster Video, 509 West Main Street (Lexington): March 2013 10 comments
Well, this has already been talked about enough that I'm not sure who the hat-tip goes to, but I finally got over to Lexington last weekend and got some shots of the Main Street Blockbuster closing down. It was already pretty near the end-days, and as I watched, I saw a guy walk out and hoick a set of display racks into his truck.
I was also in Aiken this week, and the Blockbuster there which closed about this time last year is still vacant despite being in a pretty good spot..
UPDATE -- the place is still vacant:
UPDATE 4 March 2014 -- This shot is through a windshield and from too far away, but you can see this building is now a Pet Supermarket:
UPDATE 5 October 2020: Changing name in post title from "Blockbuster" to "Blockbuster Video", updating tags, adding map icon.

The initial hat tip goes to James. I remember when James noted it that I am wasn't surprised at all to see it go because of the way the signage was...(not 100% sure of the details)
My underatanding is that this is part of a Dish Network plan to close 300 Blockbuster Video locations nationwide. Some are at the end of their lease and others it has to do with overall performance. They'll have app. 500 locations nationwide, 3 of which are in the Columbia area. Of the remaining 3, the only one that hasn't had someone come out on here and expect it to close is Rosewood.

This death was a long time in coming. I would sometimes go to the Taco Bell for lunch, when it was still on that side of the street near the Blockbuster. Seemed like the Blockbuster was always getting rid of shelves and you could see they had less and less inventory inside. Not sorry to see them go but would like to see something developed to take over this location and the old Taco Bell.

@ED I've noticed signage indicating that the old Taco Bell property has sold and am currently unsure as to what's coming next to it but keep your eyes open...

Saw this morning there was a crew working on the top of this building. I suspect they were removing rooftop units in preparation for demolition. Supposedly there is a new development plan for the lot and the old Taco Bell has reopened as a Cook Out.

I had lunch at the Cookout next door earlier this week and noticed Cookout folks parking in the old Blockbuster but I have to believe that with the way Lexington is growing, sooner or later, something will step in and backfill the old Blockbuster space...I think (especially once the road construction is complete) I think whatever winds up backfilling said Blockbuster's space will be a good boost for the Lexington area.

@ Andrew - It's seems like a nice building, but with the development plan that was posted prior to Cookout starting their renovation of the old Taco Bell building, I think the Blockbuster building is going to be demolished. I don't remember what the development plan actually looked like, but a strip mall type building seems to ring a bell. It might even impact the car wash that is behind both the old Blockbuster building and the Cookout.
On a different note, is the Cookout really that large inside for all those cars in the Blockbuster lot to be eating there all at the same time? Doesn't look that big from the outside. I mean, it is a renovated Taco Bell and they really just gave it a new facade. Didn't enlarge it to my knowledge.

One of my neighbor's posted on our homeowner's association Facebook page that they were going to build a Denny's at this location. Not sure how that will work with the parking or if it is even true. Cookout has definitely taken up all the parking, but if they put a Denny's in here, I am going to have to start taking the back way (Old Cherokee Road) out of my development to avoid the congestion at this intersection.
