While their closing note is hopeful, the real estate sign in the window and their recent facebook traffic is not. It looks like this combination Bruster's Real Ice Cream and Nathan's Famous on Columbiana Drive is gone.

I don't think I've ever had a Nathan's frank, but the few times I've had Bruster's ice cream, it's been perfectly fine. I do rather question their no-dining-room concept. I think that hurt the one on Beltline and the one in Murrells Inlet. This one actually seems to have more in the way of picnic tables and outside benches than those did though. I wonder too if some of these Columbiana/Harbison places are a victim of the Yogi Berra Effect:

Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded.

It was not a particularly peak time when I took these pix, and it was still a bit of a wait to turn left into the complex -- and that's when I had made it that far. Another trip to look into the reports of Chick-Fil-A closing in the mall got aborted when I came down the hill from St. Andrews Road and saw the backup from Bowers Parkway on -- I just pulled a you-ie and 180-ed out of there..

UPDATE 3 October 2018 -- As mentioned by commenter Tom, and as you can (barely) see in the picture below, this is now a Tony's Pizza:

  1. When you say, "I came down the hill from St. Andrews Road and saw the backup from Bowers Parkway"

I'm having a hard time picturing this one because St. Andrews Road and Bower Parkway do not intersect. My parents have been dissuaded from going shopping in that area because of Bower Parkway backups, but it was on the Piney Grove Road side...

Also Bowers Parkway should be Bower Parkway.

I do wonder, though if you were getting Columbiana's Chick-Fil-A mixed up for the recent closing of Columbia Place Mall's Chick-Fil-A (based on Trina's report that it is no more, which I confirmed)

  2. I mean that at a certain point driving down hill on Harbison from St. Andrews road, I could see that traffic was backed up on Harbison all the way from Bower Parkway apparently to I-26.

And, yes, the last time I was on Bower, it too was terribly backed up all the way to Piney Grove.

Yeah, I was probably headed for the wrong place anyway. I didn't have my laptop, but thought I recalled a report about CFA in Columbiana, so since I was in the area anyway, I was going to check it out.

  3. The only Nathan's hot dog I have tried was from the grocery store. They are good but I have no idea how they taste from a 'restaurant'. I'd love to try one at Coney Island, that would be the bomb!!

I shy away from the whole Harbison/Bower fiasco unless I have a pressing reason to be there. This past Saturday there were two 3 car wrecks on I-26 between Piney Grove and Harbison. Traffic was backed up back to St. Andrews.

The entire restaurant row along Columbiana Drive is a hot mess. Left turns are nearly impossible during peak traffic times regardless of which side of the street you are exiting onto. Columbiana Drive is also terrible after you cross over Lake Murray Blvd. back to Hwy 76. If you want to go to Groucho's or the Chinese restaurant in the old Piggly Wiggly shopping center you will take your life in your hands trying to make a left out of there onto Columbiana. Just another case of highway improvements lagging behind the amount of traffic flow. Just like the northeast around Clemson Rd.

  4. Thanks for the H/T.

The hot dogs from here were excellent. Nathan's is known for its casings, which make them super tasty. Getting one from the restaurant made them extra good since they were kept at the right temperature and slow heated. I know this only because my kid played soccer with this place's owner's kid (they're super nice folks by the way).

I fear the no dining room issue did get the better of them. That, and there isn't much parking at all. Also, I just don't think anyone would go here just for a hot dog. Hot Dog Heaven isn't far away, and has ample parking by comparison.

As for the traffic at Harbison, I don't find it all that bad, to be honest. I've lived in Irmo for a good while now and have figured out that it can be easier to navigate if you know the ways.

  5. I think the last time I was in Harbison was before Christmas 2007. After that, I decided life was too short to put up with that many people/frustrations in one place.

Nathan's hotdogs are no great shakes. I mean, they're better than most, but OM all beef franks have it all over Nathan's on the grill.

And it is hard to believe they culd beat Sanday's for pure hotdog goodness.

  6. The hotdogs at Sam's Club are Nathan's hotdogs. Very hot and a steamed bun... and huge. Can't really beat the combo price of $1.89 for a dog and coke if you don't want fancy extras, but not really a "lunch" destination.

  7. Went to their Facebook page and they had created an event that was saying that this location is for sale. So they are officially gone.
