Conrad's, 2865 Devine Street: March 2011   11 comments

Posted at 1:06 am in Uncategorized

Here's another quick turn-around story (like Al-Amir). I had only just heard that Conrad's was closed, but when I got around to driving by, it was already open again as Henry's.

I wish them luck, but this building has been ill-starred lately. We've had Tiffany's Bakery, Granville's and now Conrad's in just the space of a few years. Maybe it's the apostrophe.

(Hat tip to someone in the comments -- I can't find the name right now..)

  1. Wow yah this turnaround was lightspeed, Well before the signs were up the place had lights on at night and I drove by it at night and this was after Conrad's closed and was wondering if it had become a private club or rental venue. Guess this answers that.

  3. This building was one of the first KFC's in Columbia and served in that role until the 1970s.

  4. Are you sure? In the 1970 phonebook, the only KFC location on Devine Street was 2631 Devine, which is now Yo Burrito.

  6. Yup, the Yo Burrito building was the old KFC. At some point they left that building and built a new one across Devine St, which operated for a while and finally closed and was then torn down. (I've gone through that intersection a lot over the years.)

  7. Your right Ted. The similar shape of the building threw me off. Wasn't this building a gas station? The large windows suggest service bays.

  8. I think this place was a "Haven's Frame It Yourself" back in the mid 1980s. If it had previously been a gas station, it would have been before that.

  9. Not only was this location once a filling station, it was a restaurant called The Filling Station after that, and a Tiffany's Bakery after that.

  10. It was the second location of "Columbia Bread and Bagel" before it was Tiffany's, the first being in Trenholm Plaza, where the pancake place is.

  11. I'll add those names to the Tiffany's entry.
