As commenter Jason notes, this McDonald's on Sunset Boulevard near the I-26 interchange has closed for remodeling. This is something a number of the local McDonald's have done recently, including ones on Garners Ferry, Hardscrabble, Two Notch and Decker.

I don't expect this

but you never know.

  1. Hey, I still won't eat there, but if they give this McDonald's the I-Drive (last picture is of the old McDonald's on International Drive in Orlando) treatment, it'll make my commute a good ten times more enjoyable.

  2. I remember a time when McD's used to pride itself on its service and at the time it had the best in the fast food business. Sadly, the last half dozen times I have eaten at one, not all of them in Columbia, the service sucked.

  3. Check this out. The future McDonald's opened in Cayce. So this one could be the same.

  4. "features self-ordering digital kiosks, allowing for customers to point and click on the items they want to order."

    Rhut rho shaggy!

  5. ^Good. ALL restaurants need to offer that. There is NO debate about that. The spoken word is by far the least efficient mode of communication in many situations and ordering food is one of them.

  6. I bet them kiosks won't ask for $15.00 an hour.

  7. In the meantine, the McDonald's at 1303 Charleston Highway (near the Knoxx Abbott Curve) is closed for remodeling similar to this one...

The one with the self ordering Kiosk is at 2929 Charleston Highway (near I-26).

  8. @Kenneth - especially when the people behind the counter can hardly speak English themselves. And you still have to worry about the dipsh!ts is the back screwing your order up.....

  10. My friends and I frequent the McDonald's at 2425 Sunset Blvd. at least four times a week. Today, 2/20/18, five of us were there for morning break around 10:30 AM. Employees were insisting we use the kiosk instead of ordering at the register. I insisted I wanted to order at the register and that I do not like to order using the kiosk. Even the manager on duty heard me say what my preference was. No one offered to take my order verbally at the register even though there was an employee standing at the register. So I asked, "Do you want us to leave? I asked this same question two times, but no one gave us a response. So my friends and I left the premises.
Please tell me what has happened to "customer service"?
By the way, I love your coffee, but I guess I will have to get it at another location. Thank you.

  11. So sad. When will they learn that not everyone wants to be self served, self checked, or abused.

  12. I, for one, welcome our new robotic, self-service kiosk overlords! Seriously, given the caliber of the average McD's employee, I'd rather deal with a machine for taking my order.

However, that particular location was wrong in how they handled the situation. If a customer is not comfortable with the kiosk, the employee should help input the order into the kiosk for the customer, or he should just take the order at the register. Again, I'm not surprised with how the employees acted, and frankly, I would have left, too. Can't remember if Hardee's is still serving breakfast at 10:30 AM, but if they are, their biscuits are better, anyway.

  14. What I'd like to know is this: when will these companies realize that we'd rather talk to a real person in the USA as opposed to something that is voice activated or a Press # for ___ system?

Pat Sajak had this line on that one: "Please hold. Your call is important to us, though not important enough to hire people to answer phones."

I'd also like to see movements to raise requirements on local ownership of TV, newspaper and radio outlets...

  15. @Carole -- not shocked at all about the behavior of those McD's employees. Coincidentally, at that very location (albeit several years ago), I recall an employee there getting frustrated with a drive-thru customer and SCREAMING out for everyone in the store to hear, "I TOLE DAT WOMAN TO PULL TO SECOND WINDOW BUT AIN'T BE LIST-NIN to MEEEEE!!!"

I'm with kkaos... bring in the robots!

  16. I think a large part of the problem is the caliber of workers McDonald's (and several places like that) attract. Plus I don't think fast food workers are thought on very highly.

  18. I'm not sure where I stand with this. I'll admit the average IQ of a McDonald's employee is about the same as a rock but I'm at the age where all of this automation is getting too much for me. I refuse to put my banking information on my cell phone so I can swipe and pay. All these advances are just making it easier for someone to rob you blind of steal your identity.

Also, it does nothing to address the fact that there are still idiots and work-release convicts in the back making a royal mess of your order.

But they do have good coffee......

  20. I agree with Homer...I refuse to bank on my smartphone...I prefer physically running to the bank to deposit checks...I will manage my accounts online but prefer to do so from a real computer...
