Not long after closing the Forest Drive store, Bi-Lo continues to make changes in the Columbia market. As mentioned by commenter James R, and explained in this State story, three of Columbia's Bi-Lo's are being reflagged as Harveys. That brand is still associated with the chain, but targets a more value-conscious shopper. To me it seems a little awkward to admit your flagship stores aren't value-conscious, but there you go.

This store in High Point On Decker is already fully converted, with a new facade and even a marquee on the High Point street sign tower. Though I could have sworn I drove that stretch very recently without noticing any work.

According to The State, the other two local stores switching over are the one at the top of Saint Andrews Road and the one, which I can't bring to mind at all, on Monticello Road.

  1. Got the weekly grocery circular yesterday that had both Harvey and Bi-Lo. Pork butts cheaper at Harvey's this week

  2. I drive by there practically every day and the changes (exterior anyway) were done in a couple of days. One day it was a Bi-Lo, the next day the signage was gone and the next it was Harvey's. I may be in the Widewater vicinity today to see what that one looks like.

  3. The font reminds me of Havertys furniture stores. If I were to ride by and not pay close attention I would think it was a furniture store, based on the pictures here. Of course the word under Harveys gives it away, supermarket is a little hard to read.
I just seem to be bummed out for some reason that BI-LO is changing to Harveys, do not know why, maybe as I grow older I have a problem with change where in the past I thought change was good in some cases.
I miss A&P, Winn-Dixie, and now the Pig is all but gone. Can't stand Wal-Mart, but that may be because the Wal-Mart on my side of town is different from others, so I've heard.
The Wal-Mart on my side of town is known as the "Ghetto" Wal-Mart. Reasons are poor inventory, thieves, loiterers, gangsters, etc.
Personally I like ALDI even though I ca not find everything I need there. Maybe Harveys has found a niche so I'll give them a chance.

  4. @Rick, you must be talking about either Forest Dr or Garners Ferry. I hate Wal-mart too but the grocery prices are pretty damn good. If I do go, I try to go between 8:00am - 2:00pm. And you will never catch me in there in the evening.

Anyway, I went into Harvey's tonight for the $3.99 t-bones! It's the value pack (3 t-bones) that's $3.99 lb. And the single packs are $4.29 lb. The interior has changed a little bit. It seems like they may have taken an aisle out and expanded the remaining aisles in the grocery section. The produce section seems pretty big now too. They have taken some registers away as well. I was surprised that there were no self checkout registers in there. But then again, considering the area, I guess I can understand why.

    BTW, the t-bones were DELICIOUS!

  5. Went by the Widewater Square location today. Man, they painted the whole front overhang of the strip in 'Harvey' green. Talk about ghetto, Rick. That whole strip mall is it!!!

  6. I second what Homer said about Widewater Square (3315 Broad River Road)...last couple of times I've been in that Bi-Lo I got vibes comparable to what Homer describes...

The one Ted mentions in the main post that he can't bring to mind can be found at 3900 North Main Street.

  7. Isn't all of Broad River Rd GHETTO now? Back in 1990, I lived in Bentley Court Apts when it was first built. It was GREAT back then. But lately, I heard it was too ghetto to live in. I try to stay away from Broad River Rd as much as possible. Before I got this job (at Bush River and I-20) in April, I can't remember the last time I was on Broad River Rd.

  8. I was driving on 501 through Conway this past weekend and the Bi Lo there was reflagged as Harveys as well.
