Considering the place was open from 1981 and considering how much I like pizza and Italian food in general, I'm not sure how I was totally unaware of Tony's. Perhaps because of the location, if ever I saw it, I thought "no parking", or perhaps it's because they closed at 2:30 and it would always be later when I would drive by -- I don't really know. At any rate, this Washington Plaza storefront is vacant now.

  1. Was this Tony's and the one in Cayce owned by the same people? I am assuming the one in Cayce is still open?

  2. The ownership between Tony's on Washington and Tony's Cayce split several years back with Cayce going to new owners, IIRC.

The downfall for this location was likely twofold: Main Street revitalization concentrated a lot of foot traffic onto Main Street and the 1200 and 1500 and 1600 Blocks.

Also, Washington Square used to be a private office building. Then the city bought it. The garage was public hourly parking until the City decided that it needed/wanted the garage for city employees and limited public parking to about 10 2-hour meters. City employees can enter their building directly through the garage on the 2nd or 3rd floor. So there was little to no foot traffic from the public going past Tony's which is offi-street and down a dark hallway past the garage elevators.

  3. Feel for all of the businesses listed on this website. We were part of the business community for 49 years and made many friends during this time. We closed Tony's for the above statement as well as our lease had expired and our health was the most important issue. We miss all of our customers, and did not know this site was available. Guess some folks like to read sad endings to a business. Thanks to Steve for posting some of the problems of doing business in the City of Columbia.....taxes, regulations and more taxes.

  4. There is signage up indicating that this Carolina Wings and Ribhouse is attempting to move into this location.
