Sammi's Deli, 506 Beltline Boulevard: Summer 2015   12 comments

Commenter AW noted that the Sammi's on Beltline is now closed and a Peruvian restaurant is in its place -- although looking closely at this shot I snapped from the road, I'm wondering if that might be gone as well.

As far as I am aware, this (if open) is the only Peruvian place in town. It's supposed to be one of the world's great cuisines, but it's not one I know anything at all about.

As for Sammi's, I have to admit the only time I've been in one (not this one) I was so non-plussed at the interior that I just ordered a drink and left rather than eating there.

  1. I've had cuy in Peru. It's nothing to write home about, other than to say you've done it. I honestly don't remember the other foods I had when I was there. I'll drop by this place on the odd chance that it's still open at let you know what the fare is like. Most native North and South American fare is pretty tasteless on the whole, so you pretty much have to add salt and pepper.

  2. Speaking od Deli's, my Dad hung out at the Elmwood Deli back in the 70's and early 80's, among other places.
Elmwood Deli now known as No Name Deli never had a sign indicating what the business was, he and his buddies as well as many others just started calling it no name deli, as we can see the name stuck, and now they have a sign.
My Dad was very good at pool. He and his pool shooting buddy known as Winnsboro would travel around town hustling people. I can remember him coming home late at night, Mom raising hell with him for staying out so late, and he would pull piles of cash out of his pockets that he had won shooting pool.
I also remember one time the newspaper had a article about him and Winnsboro and he got so pissed off that they had his picture in the paper because that cut back on the number of people that would take him up on a game.
I have more stories about this but...

  3. There used to be a Sammi's in Widewater Square that I used to go to periodically when I lived in that area. The food was ok, but it was nothing to write home about.

When I think of sub sandwiches, only Sub Station II and Groucho's comes to mind. SSII's number 19 or the Reuben as well as any of Groucho's "dips".

I don't know why, but I do not care for Subway or most of the other chains. I guess I'm just partial to the 'little guys' (local) when it comes to a good sandwich.

  4. Columbia, unfortunately, does not have anything to compare with Dagwood's in Surfside.

  5. I agree with Homer. SSII is my favorite spot to hit for sub's.
I almost always go for the #17 myself and am not familiar with the #19. I'll check the #19 out next time I go in.
I have heard that Publix Deli makes an outstanding sub.
It's just that there is not a Publix near me or anywhere I travel when hungry, so I have not tried one yet.

I really enjoy a Groucho's STP with Formula One Sauce, so much so I make them at home regularly.
Back in 1983 and 84 when I had the stereo store in Five Points I would order an STP 2 or 3 times a week for lunch and have one of my employees walk over and get it. We were only 1/2 block away.
I was eating my STP one day and the employee I sent to pick it up was looking at it and asked what were the small things on top, it was the bacon bits of course but I said maggots just being stupid. I said that because there had been a rumor going around that Groucho's got in trouble for having maggots on their meat slicer.
I said this is a maggot burger. From that point on, after I'd order one and just screwing around with my employee,
I'd say "Brian, go get my maggot burger from Groucho's".
One day, shortly after he left to get my STP, I got a call from Groucho himself, he wasn't to happy, he wanted to know why I was calling the STP a maggot burger. Turns out when my employee got there that day Groucho's could not find my order, Groucho asked my employee what I had ordered and the employee said
"All I know is Rick calls it a Maggot Burger".
Geez Us, I never saw that coming. Groucho and I had been pretty good friends up to that point, needless to say our relationship cooled slightly after that.

As a disclaimer, I never believed the rumor that there were maggots on the meat slicer, I never spread that rumor and I still eat at Groucho's. They have great food, it's a little pricey but what do you expect if you want a quality meal.
If you can afford it, wouldn't you pay an extra four bucks for an STP or Ruben from Groucho's with a cream soda, pickle and chips and have them bring it to your table rather than deal with McDonalds for a Big Mac meal?

  6. Great story about Groucho's, Rick. Way to make friend... What is a #17? I'm not familiar with that one. Th3 #19 is the Super Special, Turkey Breast, Ham, Salami, Bologna, Pepperoni, Cappicola and Cheese with all the fixings. The Reuben is a #21.

Speaking of cream soda, I found 1 liter bottles of Dad's at Big Lots for 99¢. It was the blue color as well.

  7. Rick's comment about spending more for quality food made me think of an opposite case. Sandy's Hot Dogs. Don't get me wrong, they are great. But even with the coupons you find in the Free Times, they are just way overpriced. I would much rather go to Rush's and get a couple of chili dogs with slaw on the side and build my own. And I get to have fries with them, which is always a plus for me.

  8. Last night I was pretty tired, fell asleep on the couch and did not eat supper. Got up this morning and started thinking about a Hardee's Breakfast Platter, sausage, eggs, biscuit and gravy, hash rounds and a side of grits.
Got to Hardee's and after about 10 minutes I sat down with my food. Just as I started eating some 300 pound woman sat down three booths away from me. She had on so much perfume I could not smell my food, much less enjoy it.

I was pretty pissed and kept thinking, what could I do to let her know she should just take a bath every now and then, and save the perfume for home back at the zoo.

I could not think of a way to communicate my thoughts without causing a confrontation, then suddenly, I had to fart, really bad. Oh there is a God, I got up and walked towards the bathroom, just as I got to her table, and walking by as close as I could, I let it fly. It was a nice clear, authoritarian fart, and right next to her. She said "Excuse you" quite loudly. I said nothing, cut a circle around some other tables and went back to my meal.
I only hope I ruined her breakfast as much as she ruined mine.

  9. @Homer - What happened to those mystery meat Edna Hot Dogs we spoke about in the past?
You know, the ones they sold 4 for a dollar, the ones that the meat was red on the outside, flesh colored on the inside and stained the bun red.
I can't believe you would eat a Rush's hot dog in lieu of an Edna's dog. Tell me it ain't so.

Remember when we were in grade school.
When the word ain't was used, some wise ass kid would say,
"My teacher said ain't, ain't a word cause ain't ain't in the dictionary".
    Ain't that cute?

  10. @Rick - oh, I ain't forgot about Edna's. They were in the back of my mind while writing that post. I just used Rush's because they are more convenient. You ain't gonna find an Edna's all over town. Heck, you can still get three chili dogs, fries and slaw for less than $6.00 at Edna's. You ain't gonna find a deal like that anywhere else in town.

  11. Awesome Hardee's story, Rick!! I usually don't get gas until after I eat their food.

  12. Apparently, one of my daughter's friend's parent(s) works at, and/or "owns" that Peruvian restaurant so I don't know....they also saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night, sounds serious. Anyway, I picked both of them up from school after a concert the other night, and after I dropped her at home, I rode by to check it out. It was open, but I'll have to eat the food later.
