Kentucky Fried Chicken #7, 7228 Parklane Road: 1990s 1 comment

This KFC was gone as early as the February 1997 phonebook, which is the earliest I have at home. As you can see from the ad in the 1976 phonebook, at one time this was store #7 for Kentucky Fried Chicken in Columbia, and at this remove, it's easy to forget that the picture in the ad was that of a living man who still toured the country promoting Kentucky Fried Chicken, despite being unhappy with what corporate had done with his gravy.

I barely remember the Devine Street location, which would be across the street from the current Burger 77. I think it closed in the mid 1980s, then was a Chinese restaurant until the mid 1990s. Looks like it's a parking lot now.

I did eat at the 3011 Two Notch Road location (now a TitleMax office) and 3507 N. Main (now a China Wing Basket) with my dearly departed grandmother (ca. 2003) but the others were gone by the time I came along...I don't know all the details but I know they were both gone by the 2005/06 timeframe.
It was mind boggling for me to read the list and contemplate the fact that KFC itself is still going but none of the locations on the phone book ad here listed are still in operation.

Huh, ya learn something new every day. I didn't know KFC stood for Kentucky Fried Chicken. I always thought it meant komplete f*kin crap.

I read somewhere that Kentucky Fried Chicken changed their name to KFC because the state of Kentucky wanted a cut of the profits when KFC used the name Kentucky in their advertising.

I never knew that the Colonel was real until I saw him in person at a Sea Food place in Murrells Inlet in 1972. It was like seeing a chicken basket come to life with him in his white outfit and his white beard. He was waiting in line with his entourage.

Does anyone know when the KFC on Bush River Road closed? It wasn't listed on the '76 phonebook ad but I feel like it was open into the '80s. "McCary's Sports Bar & Grille" at 851 Bush River is there now, right next to Firestone.

KFC, in my opinion is just way overpriced for the quality of chicken you get. I would much rather get mine from Rush's or Zesto's even though they are getting pretty expensive as well. Bi-Lo and Kroger have some great fried chicken in the deli if you can time it so it's fresh out of the fryer and hasn't been sitting under the heat lamps for hours. From past experience, between 5 and 6 pm is best, when they are preparing for the 'after work' shopping rush.

Homer I do have a recollection of a Chinese restaurant being in that building and the only reason I knew it was a former KFC is because my dad hinted as such (but I don't remember the KFC being there). I don't keep track of Chinese restaurants as I shy away from them since they smell unappetizing to me.
Now with Pizza Hut next door gone it remains to be seen what will come in next...

I thought that was a KFC on St. Andrews but wasn't sure. Does anyone remember the Dairy Queen that was at the corner of St. Andrews and Ashland? Seems like when the McDonald's moved into that spot, they paid for DQ to move across the street. Was that same location as KFC?

ED the former KFC is actually across the street from where McDonald's is currently.
I don't remember there being a Dairy Queen being there except for what people here who are older than me have said about it. If it was gone by b 1995 chances are I have no memory of it...

@ED - I remember the DQ at St. Andrews and Ashland. Some of us kids would eat there after going to the Putt-Putt remember it?) when it was next door to Ryan's steak house. I don't remember them relocating anywhere after McDonald's took over the corner.

It's Daryl Hannah of SNL fame, isn't it? He did the best Bill Clinton impression of any one. But I agree the new KFC ads are terrible, although I guess he is just reading what someone else writes. Doesn't make sense to try to recreate a real person who is on film and not sound or act anything like him.
