Stuft Stuff, Dutch Square: 6 July 2012 20 comments
Well, the Egyptian restaurant in Dutch Square, Stuft Stuff has now closed. The place went into the corner location across the corridor from the old Chick-Fil-A, a slot that has in the past housed Gabby's Pizza and D'Avino's Pizzeria.
I'm not entirely sure what they served, but it sounds intriguing. Apparently they had pizza and vegetarian/vegan items. Their Facebook page suggests that the closing was due to low traffic in Dutch Square (which I can well believe) and that they may relocate.
(Hat tip to commenter Eddie)

There used to be a Sbarro's there, no? I think that's the same space.
I went to Dutch Square recently to walk around, and it's such a shame to see how sad that mall is. I remember that mall back being busy many years ago. Sad, just sad now.

I'm going to have to take a walk through Dutch Square soon just to see how depressing it is. If it's worse that the last time I was there (about a year or so ago) it will be totally pathetic. I have kept up from time to time with the closings and was wondering; is there any original business left except for The Rogue??

@homer, take a look here for the original tenants.
I believe you are right about The Rogue. What is also striking is not just how many originals are gone from DS, but how many big names on that first list are now completely defunct everywhere.

I've got a couple of lists of old tenants. I'll compare these to yours and see how many memories I can dig up....

Back in the mid 80s I used to work at the CFA across from here, and I remember one of those cookie stores - Mrs. Fields maybe?

Around the same time as this closure came the departure of Merritt's Jewlery and Dressbarn. Lately, I've noticed that there is a sign from NAI Avant offering some of the mall for office space

It appears as if the latest eating establishment to have a go at this space is: Squeaky’s Take Out

Squeaky's Take out didn't last long (but never featured here)...
A few weeks back there was discussion about a place called The Crab Shack that intended to set up shop here.
It now appears that this is the spot that The Crab Shack intends to utilize...
I watched a WLTX report on them and it sounded like the owners were passionate about making it work but there is no doubt that they have their work cut out for them...
I think Squeaky's closed before Belk did but since Belk has closed, both Café and Scoop and Subway have closed from within the food court (but neither one has featured here).

I have found some postings that tell me that The Crab shack is indeed open at Dutch Square in this spot and photos that make me believe they might just be the breakthrough Dutch Square needs...

Homer this space has had 3 pizza places come and go in the last decade or so plus something called Squeaky's Take Out that came after Stuft Stuff (but didn't feature here)...
They specalize in offering crab (and several other seafood entrees) as takeout meals but when I went today (just to walk the mall with a friend) I noticed several tables of people eating/enjoying it and I just felt like they'd have staying power...plus Chef T Takeout and Mano's Express have plans to open in the food court (per the Phillips Edison siteplan)...I have a gut feeling that this trio is the 1-2-3 punch to revive Dutch Square's food court.
Here is a WLTX article discussing the conversation it's sparked about the future of Dutch Square and the idea that it could revive Dutch Square and I got an optimistic gut feeling....

The food certainly looks good from the video and there are certainly a lot of people working in that area of town, myself included, but I'm skeptical. Still I hope they are successful and I'll certainly give them a try. I wonder if they looked at the old Village Gourmet spot as that's an externally facing store front at least.

Any ideas of anyone coming to the mall that is new?

Toby in addition to the trio of eating places I mentioned a few comments up, a jewelry store called Jewelry World has set up shop in a spot that used to be Claire's...

BTW I'm trying to picture the Village Gourmet storefront that Justin mentioned in terms of where it is, etc.

@Andrew - Ted did a closing on it a while ago so it's on the list. If you're looking at the plaza that has Melting Pot in it on Colonial Life, it's several store fronts to the right.

After realizing that Village Gourmet is outside Dutch Square I can now say the following: the ownership of The Crab Shack had a vision of breathing new life into Dutch Square and locating in the Colonial Village storefront Justin spoke of would go against that vision of theirs...

They were originally going to serve real Egyptian/Mediterranean food, and I think their menu had the standard "middle eastern" fare.
Seems like it took forever to open, and when I was at the mall on Saturdays headed to the movies, it never looked opened. Maybe they were only open during the week, maybe only at certain times, I'm not sure.
That mall has pretty much zero new foot traffic, and opening anything there is guaranteed to be a losing proposition, despite the fact I think the mall is pretty much giving space away at this point.
