Tony's Pizza, 224 Knox Abbott Drive (Parkland Plaza): September 2011 14 comments
While I was out and about today, I noticed some guys apparently hanging a new banner that said Zeus Pizza on the marquee of Tony's Pizza at Parkland Plaza. When I got back by after making a few other stops, it appeared that perhaps I was wrong and they were taking it down, or they needed some more tools to make it stick. Either way, it's clear from looking at the signs in the store windows that the name change is official. I drove down the street to the Tony's near 12th Street, and there is no indication of any change there, so I guess just this location has changed ownership. (The Parkland Plaza roadside sign still lists Dollar Discount as well as Tony's).
The door sign namechecks Columbia's Greek Festival. I certainly took the opportunity to stop by this weekend and have some Baklava and Galaktoboureko!
(Hat tip to commenter Tonkatoy, sort of)
UPDATE 30 September 2011 -- Commenter Andrew sends these two pictures of the new Zeus banner I saw now being successfully installed:

I have no idea what is going on there. The tables and chairs were out on the sidewalk last week and the sign said they were open.
Weird.

Tony's is now Zeus Pizza, I guess the new owner just hasn't changed the outer sign yet. Here is their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Zeus-Pizza/180703461988147

The owners of this now closed Tony's opened a new pizza shop on St.Andrews in the old Steakout building. It's called Tony O's.

I can never figure out what the deal with Tony O's is...because it seems like half the time I pass by, nobody's home there...

I think that Zeus has closed. The sign they had papered over "Tony's" is gone, and the lights were off during the posted hours.

If Zeus has closed already it's because they were slow and way too expensive for this part of town. Good food, though.

Question to Dennis. I am not trying to be a smartass when I ask this.
I look at the menu on the photos posted on the entry for Zeus. The prices to me seem very reasonable to me, actually cheap to be honest. So my question to you is what is wrong with that part of town? I've never been in that area, so I am curious.
thank youmichael

The prices seem fairly standard to me. Keep in mind there are 2 well-established Greek restaurants (Grecian Gardens and Nicks House of Pizza) not too far from this locale.

I ate there once for lunch with my wife. We are both big eaters and each got a salad and something like a calzone that was one of the house specialties. I don't remember details, just that it was about twice what lunch normally costs. $15 apiece or thereabouts.

We ate lunch at Tony's every so often and I thought the pricing was pretty good.

Tony's Original has a full page ad in The State today . Their address is 975 Knox Abbott. How long have they been open?

The "standalone" Tony's changed hands a couple of months ago. Apparently the old owners retired and sold out. There may have been a friendly agreement between the two Tony's over the name. The new owners of Tony's may have objected to the other Tony's. As I understand it you're not usually allowed to duplicate a business name in the same municipality.
