Mushi Mushi Hibachi & Sushi Bar, 7546 Garners Ferry Road Suite 400-D: Mid September 2010 10 comments
Mushi Mushi (can anyone translate that?) was in the little strip adjacent to the Wal Mart and old Fire Mountain Grill / Ryan's on Garners Ferry Road (and almost next to the old Larry's Subs).
There are actually a number of vacancies in this complex, which seems to me to be in a reasonably good location -- there's direct access from Wal Mart and an additional light for side access from Garners Ferry. Of course, in this case, the old Ryan's being a Hibichi Grill itself now can't have helped.
I never ate at Mushi, in fact I don't think I've eaten at any "hibachi" place. I certainly couldn't get my mind around sushi, I'm afraid. Maybe if they had tried this concept I might have stopped by..

There was a character on the Barney Miller TV show that every week said "mushi mushi" (cue the canned laughter). I still don't get it.

Probably Nick Yemana (Jack Soo). He passed away during the series, and Abe Vigoda, who was the butt of all the "old" jokes is still around. Go figure.

Mushi Mushi was having a hard time for a while, and seemed like they had trouble keeping enough habachi cooks on the staff. The owner would often come out from working behind the bar and work one of the tables. Here's an advertising link to the place:
The event that drove the last nail into their coffin was when the Fire Mountain / Ryans closed and reopened as a Chinese / Hibachi Buffet. Although not nearly as good or authentic as the food at Mushi Mushi, the Chinese buffet offered a wider and less expensive variety of food, which appealed to the tastes of many in the Garners Ferry Rd area.
The owner still runs a Japanese Hibachi place in Lexington, although I don't know the name of it.

Steve is correct about Mushi Mushi translation. I work for a Japanese Co. and hear it all day long. I even answer the phone sometimes with Mushi Mushi when one of the Japanese call me just to confuse them. We have caller I.D. so I can see who is calling, and it stumps them when they think they dialed an American. They start talking in Japanese.

There was some signage for weeks touting a new burger and wing joint that was going into this location in July. It was going to be called "Cat Man Dewz." Looks like that plan fell thru, as the signage is down, and there's an "Available" sign in its place.

Ooops! Gotta take back my comment. Whatever was going on, they got worked out. They are open for business. There's a video on the wltx website about their grand opening, and I dropped in tonight to check out their menu. I hope they can make it, but they are in a tough-to-see spot. And I would have eaten there tonight, if they only had cheese fries on the menu.

Mushi Mushi roughly translates into saying "Hello" when answering the telephone.
