I was quite surprised to see this Hardee's, more or less at the corner of Percival Road and Forest Drive, closed.

As far as I could tell driving by daily, it seemed to do a reasonable amount of business. What's more, this section of Forest Drive is now an Interstate exit zone, so it should have been drawing from more than just the local area.

My first thought was that the opening of Cookout just a few slots down the road was the cause. The problem with that theory is that Hardee's does a brisk breakfast business, and Cookout, as far as I know, doesn't have a breakfast menu.

The more daylight shots above are from commenter kholler: Thanks!

  1. I always thought that Hardee's had outlived its own existence. I remember when I first heard of Hardee's I was visiting my cousins in Tulsa, OK. A couple of years later they bought out the Burger Chef franchise and added Roy Rogers fried chicken to their menu. A few years after that, I noticed a lot of the inner city Hardee's were closing in my hometown of Indianapolis, IN. I never really cared for their food. Breakfast was ok if I was in a pinch.

  2. Before Hardee's rebranded itself (I think when they took on the persona of Carl's Jr.'s) they really did suck! They tried to do so many different items that they all ended up mediocre, to say the least. When they brought back the char broiled burgers, I thought that maybe we were going to get back to the way Hardee's used to be. But, no. They are starting to expand their menu by adding chicken and now fish to the menu (plus some of those limited edition sandwiches that just look plain disgusting). Not to mention that most of their sandwiches are gut bombs that cater people who don't have to worry about their waistlines. The smaller burgers are good and filling and the chicken tenders with onion rings are great. I'll still pick Wendy's or BK any day.

  3. But the ads for those limted edition sammiches, Homer! Oh, yes, what ads!

  4. I think the best move Hardee's could make is to serve breakfast all day, seems to work for Sonic and Bojangles.

  5. Hardee's/Carl's Jr. pretty proudly don't even pretend to offer any healthy food on their menu, which I have to respect even if it means I won't eat there. You know what you're getting when you walk in, and they're not going to try to lie to you by selling you a salad that's actually 1200 calories.

On the other hand, I do wonder what it means for their bottom line if a store in a location like this one closed.

  6. I kinda figured Hardees was going for that Taco Bell poor college hungover crowd, especially based on their ads a few years ago. They are currently advertising a $5 deal, which would be very tempting to a poor college student who really only needs to "eat" once a day. For someone who actually wants a good meal, not so much. I say find your niche and ride it. Taco Bell has done a very good job with that. I haven't eaten there in over 20 years since I was in school, but I frequented it often at the time. Speaking of Taco Bell, Jim Gaffigan has a great bit. YouTube it. I did eat @ a Red Burrito about 8 or so years ago. Taco Bell killed it, and that says a great deal.

  7. You folks speaking about Taco Bell vs. Hardee's going after a comporable demographic made me think of how Ellen DeGeneres once said in her monologue, "most Taco Bell customers don't even wake up until 3 in the afternoon"

One thing Hardee's has going for it (for me) is that they offer Cherry Coke the times I eat there.

I think that the close proximity to I-77 will aid the process of a prospective new eating establishment setting up shop here.

  8. @tonkatoy - I will admit that the ads cater directly to the demographic Hardee's is looking for - guys with nuclear metabolisms and cast iron stomachs that can eat just about anything. I used to be that way. I could down a 16" pizza and a pitcher of beer and not gain an ounce. There is, however, something to say about a really hot chick dislocating her jaw to wolf down one of these monster burgers, but I don't think this is the forum to talk about it....:^)!!!! And now that I think of it, I've never seen a hot chick in Hardee's..hmmm.

@Jason - I don't eat very at Hardee's very often just because of the calorie counts that go this most of their menu. I stick with the 1/4 lb. burgers (or the Big Twin, when it's on the menu) or the chicken strips. I do like the beer battered onion rings so that is usually my side. I have never eaten one of the 'monster' burgers and don't plan to anytime in the near future....:^)

  9. Homer, there is indeed a paucity of hot chicks at Hardee's. I suspect that's because there is no Gilly's bull in their restaurants (hottest ad EVAH!!!).

That, or they are busy catfighting at the BBQ grill.

  10. There's a sign on the building now saying that a Sonic Drive-In will be opening soon.
