Forest Lake Shopping Center, 4801 Forest Drive: 1982 9 comments
A distant view of the whole shopping center plot:
The First Citizens stands more or less exactly where Campbell's Drugstore was:
The new Forest Acres Town Clock:
The Talbot's building is where the far end of the first building was:
This is the second building of Forest Lake Shopping Center which is still standing today:
Sakura was Christo's Roast Beef House as well as Moolan's Hide-Away, Biddie Banquet and serveral other restaurants:
Coplon's was originally Colonial grocery:
This was originally Dobbs House and several other restaurants:
The Forest Lake Shopping Center Park was originally owned by Colonial and fell into disrepair after that store closed:
This was the original location of Forest Lake TV:
The current garden center (not to be confused with the one sometimes listed below) and Webb Rawls gallery/framing center share the old First Citizens location, with the gallery being in the old main building (the vault is still in there) and the garden center being in the drive-through buildings and parking lot. I suspect the listings below give several different bank tenants for this slot, but I'm not sure which are here and which are elsewhere in the shopping center:
Forest Lake Shopping Center was the name of the shopping center at the North-East corner of Trenholm Road & Forest Drive, across Forest Drive from Trenholm Plaza and across Trenholm Road from Five Guys and Forest Acres Town Hall.
As I remember Forest Lake Shopping Center it never quite thrived the way Trenholm Plaza did, and over the years it gradually got a bit dowdy. In the end, instead of giving the place some TLC and a facelift, the main building was torn down to be replaced by a two new ones, a First Citizens bank and Talbot's. (Just recently the Forest Acres town clock was put up at the corner of the old Shopping Center Space).
The second original building of Forest Lake Shopping Center still stands and now houses Coplon's, Sakura and several other shops.
As you can see from the listings below, the city directory went back and forth on whether Dobb's House (in the corner of the parking lot) and the Garden Center (across Gills Creek) were offical parts of the shopping center or not. You can also see that they also incorrectly listed Trenholm Plaza fixtures Piggly Wiggly and the Post Office as being in Forest Lake Shopping Center
Rather than reproducing images from the city directories, I have opted to type them in, so search engines can find them here. That means I have probably made some typos that I will fix as they are pointed out. Also note that the early listings for the shopping center did not have suite numbers. When they started being given, I have reproduced them. Even then, not every shop was always given a number.
I have given 1982 as the closing date for Forest Lake Shopping Center because that was the last year it was a separate listing in the City Directory. Apparently at that point, they gave up running it as a going shopping center, and thereafter every shop got its own street address. However, the building was not torn down until sometime after 1984. I should have continued looking in directories after that, but for some reason I did not.
1957
No separate listing for Forest Lake Shopping Center as such was given in the 1957 city directory, but a number of the shops are listed as standalones.

UPDATE 19 October 2012: I have been reminded in the comments that this shopping center pre-dates Trenholm Plaza and that the Piggly Wiggly and Post Office did in fact start here before moving across the street. (Piggly Wiggly is, of course now long gone, but the Post Office remains in Trenholm Plaza).

I remember when they built that bank. I watched the steel go up, figured it would be some architectural steel and glass masterpiece, and was shocked, shocked I tell you, to see some faux Greek/federal revivalist/whatever they call it monstrosity be draped over the steel.

If you look at the "Images of America" series book about Forest Acres, there is a good photo of the mall when it still had the PW. There are also some good pix of the original Richland Mall.

Interesting. I did not know that! So the PW, what, started in the Colonial building and then moved to Trenholm Plaza?
How about the Post Office? It really was at Forest Lake to start?

If you go to Google Earth over this location and timewarp to 1994 you can see a good overhead view of the original building.

@ Ted- According to the photo, the PW was next to the drug in the space that was by the 1970s a conveince store.

I worked at Forest Lake Men's Shop 1972-74 while a student at Carolina and helped with the going out of business sale in 1982. Bob Moore was the owner. After it closed the Silver Fox Tennis Shop occupied the space. Good Wood Unfinished Furniture was in the old Colonial Store from 1978-1983(?)

I know this listing is two years old, but as I live in the area and grew up spending many hours at this shopping center, I thought I'd add a "new" closing. Forest Lake Focus on Hair was a little old-school style beauty salon down near the picture framing place. It closed in mid to late 2013 and had a note on the front door from the long-time stylist who said she was "laying down her shears" after 50 years. This cute little salon served mainly elderly women and for a while besides the lady who owned it, there was a nice stylist named Sue who came in from the Lexington area to do hair and did a very nice cut and color. I went to her a couple times before she became ill and then passed away in 2011. I don't know what has become of the little salon but it was an institution and a lot of women in the area went there for years. Another symbol of yesteryear gone.

Hey Tom - I also worked for Bob Moore at the Forest Lake Men's Shop while at Cardinal Newman HS before I graduated in 1966, and during Christmas break when I came home from college in 67 and 68. It was one of the best men's stores in Columbia back then. We used to hang out at Bell's Hamburgers up the street on Forest Drive after school. We lived on Forest Lake back then.

I did not know that the E in E.J. Schimdt stood for Elmo!
Anyway, Dr. Schmidt looms large in my childhood memories. I will quote myself from your early post about Campbell's Drug Store:
"Campbell's was the place to cash in the free ice cream cone certificates we received after visits to Dr. Schmidt's office behind the mall by the creek, "For Bravery in the Dentist's Chair."
Even then I thought it was funny that a dentist was pushing sugary desserts. Herr Doktor Schmidt, God bless him, was strictly old school in his chairside manner, and going to the dentist was something for a child to dread. Not at all like today's specialists in child dentistry, with their arcades and balloons and movies and degrees in child psychology. My son thinks going to the dentist is fun."
and this
"The dime store was Dodd's, where I bought my Beatles 45s. My strongest connection to Campbell's (at this location) was that our dentist, Dr. Schmidt, in his little building way down at the end of the parking lot, gave certificates for free ice cream cones at Campbell's to reward "bravery in the dentist's chair."
I'm sure he was a nice man and a good dentist, but he had a German accent, never smiled or made small talk, and his hands tasted like soap. He terrified me!"
