The Vista Grill (full name possibly Vista Bar & Grill), was until recently at the north-west corner of Lady and Assembly streets, and is another of those downtown establishments I never got around to trying. I would notice it mainly as I was circling the block trying to get free parking near The Mellow Mushroom, and the greek salad and desert banners sounded good. Of course the salad would be more a lunch item, and I'm almost never downtown then..

The still extant web site lists events from 2009, and so, I suspect, was not a major part of their business model.

(Hat tip to commenter Midnight Rambler, who also supplied the information that a place called Eddie's used to be here).

  1. Eddie's was one of my family's favorite downtown lunch spots. The restaurant was probably another victim of SCANA's move from Main Street to I-77 in Cayce.

  2. And right next door to the Vista Grill is an unassuming place that has noteworthy place in State history. In the mid 1980s, that was a clothing store called “The Reflex,” which was owned by a Tom Moseley. He openly defied State Law by daring to. . . sell clothes on a Sunday! He got into trouble several times, and it generated enough publicity that enough lawmakers finally made the first moves to relaxing what could and could not be sold on Sundays.

  3. badger, funny story. As soon as I saw this listing, I thought "Wasn't The Reflex located there?" Obviously, it was next door where you said it was. I am embarrassed to admit, but I shopped there. I seem to recall purchasing a Pedro shirt and acid washed jeans there. Hey, it WAS the '80s!

  4. The owner of Eddies has apparently passed away recently.

My parents business used to be located near Eddies, and we ate takeout from there a lot. If i remember correctly, Mr Martella's health was in decline and he sold the restaurant to his long time kitchen manager, whose name was Nelson. Not sure if that was a first name or last. I dont think the place lasted long after that.

Im also pretty sure that Eddie owned another pretty well known restaurant before Eddies, i cant quite pull the name out of my memory.

  5. Let it be known that while this was the same location as Eddies...it was not Eddies. It was a pale impersonation. I ate at Vista Grill quite a few times and the service was frequently lacking so not surprised it closed.

  6. I talked to my parents over the weekend about this and they said that before Eddies, this location was something called The Pickle Barrel. I didnt think to ask what sort of business it was.

I also need to amend my original post: My dad said it wasnt Nelson who ran the business into the ground, it was whoever Nelson sold it to a few years after he bought it from Eddie. Nelson also later opened a restaurant on Main Street, but for some reason had trouble getting a liquor license and after 18 months or so, went under.

  7. I still work downtown after a couple of decades....a group of us from work would go to Eddie's every couple of weeks. The food was great! We got a kick out of the "Yard Strutter"...their chicken offering that was really good.
