Pick-A-Flick / Moovies / Beniel Trading, 2230 Decker Boulevard: 2011 10 comments
This is one of those storefronts and names (like another on Decker) that give away nothing about what the company actually does. The slogan General Merchandise Wholesale doesn't add much more to it.
Whatever Beniel did, it thought it was worthwhile to locate in a retail plaza rather than an office complex somewhere, so I guess they did count on the public stopping by.
High Point On Decker, with the Bi-Lo and McDonalds is one of the more successful strips on Decker, but I know this slot has turned over a few times in recent years. I don't recall the other tenants except that I'm pretty sure it was a computer store at one time. I distinctly recall taking my father's printer there for warranty work, and it being a bit of a problem that I hadn't bought it there.
UPDATE 23 March 2012: Added Pick-A-Flick & Moovies to the post title based on the comments. Also, apparently this was *not* the computer store, which was next door.

There was a Moovies on Devine St where Half Moon Outfitters is now (2912 Devine) about 2002. Very quiet store with cold AC and with miles of big aisles. The workers would let my toddler son just run and run in there till he was exhausted while I looked at movies. It was great.
Rosewood Shopping Center had a PIC A FLICK and I remember that the L and the I were mounted on the storefront way too close together. Created a lot of double-takes.

There was also a Moovies / Video Update on Two Notch where Quizno's is now, next to Papa John's and Wendy's. I had to fill in at this Decker Moovies a couple of times and learned that they had an "adult room" in the back. Apparently the Two Notch store wasn't zoned for that.

K, so you must remember Mary, the District Manager? I was only Manager for about 3 months after Moovies took over. It was a whole new ball game when they came in. Everything was run by corporate. Which was the exact opposite with Pic-A-Flick.
Yeah, the Adult Room at first was "Cable Version" X-rated. Then after about 2 years, it turned into the XXX stuff, all uncensored and uncut.
Dennis, the signs were the same at all the stores. Ppl used to ask me about it at Decker all the time. I just laughed.

Sidney,
I do remember Mary. There was another manager at Two Notch that hired me, but then she was pushed out in favor of a guy named Brian. I started at Moovies on Two Notch in the summer of 96 and worked there until it closed in 99.
It was the perfect job for a high school / college kid. Ended up as assisstant manager and would always have my buddies from college come over and play video games at night on the giant TV wall.

As far as I am aware, they didn't relocate anywhere, or anywhere listed in the phonebook at any rate.

Def a Pic-a-Flick. I'll never forget going in there with my mom in the early 90s. Renting a movie and getting a bouncy ball out of their gumball machine.

It was a Pic-A-Flick Video, which was bought out by Moovies then bought out by Video Update, but this location never became Video Update. How do I know??? I was the Store Manager for 3 years while it was Pic-A-Flick then Moovies. The computer store was right next door. Ahhhh, the 90's, the memories. I think about it every time I pass by the store. I had the best crew working for me.
