Noland Bath & Idea Center, 730 Elmwood Avenue: July 2009 11 comments
Commenter Jamie pointed out this closing some time ago. In the event, I didn't have a mental image of where the place was, and didn't get around to going over there in a timely fashion.
Later, in March of last year (2011) commenters 59 Ford Wheelman and tonkatoy noted that the place was being torn down.
That time, I did get over there and got a fair number of pictures (including the first set below), but still never got around to doing a closing on it.
Yesterday I was coming in on I-126 and finally noticed the place again. This time I saw the whole thing was razed to the ground, and that it was a big complex, taking the whole block bounded by Elmwood, Gadsden, Calhoun and Wayne. Furthermore, the lot has been sold, so presumably something will be happening here soon.
(Noland itself remains in business in other places.)

Noland was originally located on Marion Street next to the old Colonial Life Insurance building until they moved to Elmwood I guess in the 70's or 80's? But I'm not sure. I remember Noland on Marion Street though..but that's been quite a while.

In line with what tonkatoy suggests, based on last I heard during a recent neighborhood association meeting, this location is still supposed to house a future credit union building. There doesn't seem any site work going on though yet.

Was this the place that used to be Wickes? I remember coming somewhere to Wickes somewhere in downtown Columbia with my father.

@badger - Wickes was a building supply store that used to be in Columbia. I'm looking at Google maps now and I think it was located on Blossom St. somewhere around the location of the current USC Greek village due to the proximity to the railroad tracks. My uncle was almost killed there when a forklift operator dropped a palate of of lumber on him.
My Dad worked at Columbia Lumber Company when it was located at the corner of either Hampton or Taylor and Huger. They were supplied by the other rail line coming into town. They had a complete mill on site that could make any custom woodwork that a contractor might require for their construction.

Oh, I remember what it was. I also remember at some point, maybe in the 1970s, they changed their name to "Nolan" or "Noland." I'm just not clear on where they were located.

Yes, it is still the credit union, there is a sign showing a rendition of the building out front and it is definitely a credit union looking place.
