Piggly Wiggly / Harris Teeter, 9710 Two Notch Road: 2000s 32 comments
LoopNet says this store was once a Piggly Wiggly, but it's the Harris Teeter label-scar most visible on the side of the building next to CVS.
For some reason, I always get Harris Teeter and Winn Dixie confused, and I had it in my mind that HT had abandoned South Carolina when that was actually WD. However, it does appear that Harris Teeter has abandoned Columbia. Their store locator shows the closest location as being around Rock HIll.
Currently this whole plaza is mostly empty except for the CVS and some sort of bank back-office-looking building. That's a little surprising given that it serves Polo Road, which I tend to think of as an upscale area, and not really in line with the Food Lion which anchors the next plaza on Two Notch, on the other side of Polo.

Funny I have been wondering what use to be here and why the whole center is dead! I asked it in the closed Stein Mart thread but don't think anyone had seen it. What's the name of this center again? It's like Pointe Centre or something.

I saw that, probably should have given you a hat tip. Not clear to me why this place didn't thrive, but one thing I did notice trying to get out of there is that the only easy way out is to turn right onto Polo towards the park complex or right onto Two Notch towards Sandhill. If you try to come out onto Two Notch and go towards Dentsville, that's impossible, and if you try to turn left onto Polo so you can use the light to go left on Two Notch, that's nearly impossible because of the traffic backed up at the light.

The still opened CVS is the oddest part, mainly because its pretty much by itself. Sad.
I think another Broad River crossing needs to be done, there needs to be a direct route from Irmo to NE Columbia!

I was thinking that when the NetBank office scaled back a few years ago, that entire area suffered. A whole lot of people worked there, and when they were gone there wasn't anything drawing people to that part of Two Notch anymore. The Triangle car rental place out front used to be a Schlotzky's. I suspect that led to Harris Teeter's closing as well.

The portion that was Netbank has been leased by BlueCross BlueShield for a couple of years.

Bruno's was based out of Alabama and got too far out from where they were based. Harris Teeter bought up the Bruno's supermarkets ≈1993-95 and after closing a few, wound up pulling out of the Columbia altogether in 2001 as I outlined earlier in this thread.
My sense is that the NetBank was originally a WalMart. WalMart had a 'regular' WalMart before building the Supercenter up the road near Sparkelberry Road. I don't know for sure but looking at from the air, it has the makings of an old style regular WalMart. Plus I know there used to be a regular WalMart before a Super WalMart and this is the most logical place for one...

you're right Andrew because on the left side of NetBank you can see the McDonald's logo which means it was a WalMart

NetBank went bankrupt in 2007. I guess there wasn't even money left to take their name off the building. It is surprising that the building owner didn't do it.

Wow, I sure was mislead...I thought NetBank was still going but heir wiki page backs Matt in saying said institution went bankrupt in 2007.
This place is called Park Centre* and is leased by Centro Properties. The former Piggly Wiggly sists vacant but the former Walmart turned NetBank is leased by BCBS. The former Piggly wiggly also has a loopnet listing

No telling how all this will pan out but stay tuned for how it does.

I have a good friend who was the CEO of one of NetBank's subsidiaries in Columbia. I remember when he told me that the FDIC was involved with the bankruptcy and his company was being bought by someone else. This was 2 jobs ago for me and 2007 sounds right.

Netbank "bought" or "merged" with an old Columbia institution called RBMG. By most accounts, RBMG was an amazing company during their "hey day" doing mortgages all over the country, but ended up with a CEO determined to diversify to a fault. He sacrificed his "cash cow" for his "pipe dreams" hence the merger with Netbank out of Atlanta. It is an unfortuate situation that cost a lot of jobs.

The Piggly Wiggly was definitely there when I moved to the area in 2001. It was Harris Teeter prior to that, no doubt, but I never saw it as a H-T in 2001 foward.

Several area Walmarts have a Blimpie Sandwich shop. I've also read that Fazoli's has opened up restaurants in some Walmarts but regrettably none here (much as I'd like to see that happen)

So you are seriously trying to tell me you weren't talking about the "golden arches" in the second of Ted's pictures? :) I know my eyes are getting bad, but I don't see a McDonald's logo in either picture. Or a Netbank sign, for that matter! ;) :)

If you look at the Site plan courtesy of Centro Properties, NetBank was in unit #1 and now BCBS operates in this area and the former Piggly Wiggly is #9.

We are talking about different buildings. I did not take any pictures of the Wal-Mart/Netbank building. Javier is saying what he has seen in person, not in any of these pictures.

The NetBank/BCBS locationa was indeed a WalMart. I shopped there. The CVS was once a Revco. There was also a Radio Shack, one of those low-cost shoe places, a hair dresser and some other shops.
The shopping center was a terrible place to get in and out of, especially when Walmart and the grocery store were still there.

In the early 2000's or so, the Pig bought out some of the Harris Teeter's remaining in the Columbia area.

A girl I know from the Charlotte area mentioned that she interviewed with Harris Teeter and they had plans to build in Columbia again which I hope they do...

It's my understanding that 3 of the 4 Harris Teeter locations in Columbia were unprofitable and so they left in 2001 and sold them to Piggly Wiggly. Too bad b/c I was a huge fan of theirs and it is one of my fantasies to see Harris Teeter back in Columbia.
Winn-Dixie filed for bankruptcy in the Spring of 2005 and pulled out of the Carolinas as part of their reorginization plan. They also had a Bahamian brand that they shut down.
