Gabby's Pizza, Dutch Square: early Feb 2011   21 comments

Posted at 11:59 pm in Uncategorized

Gabby's Pizza replaced D'Avino's Pizzaeria (which closed in September 2009) in the little doorless corner spot across from the former Chick-Fil-A. On the face of it, this seems like one of the better spots in Dutch Square, as it sits just down from the movie theaters so that you could grab a slice before your show, but in practice apparently no so much.

While I don't know this for a fact, the name "Gabby's" is unusual enough when associated with pizza that I'm sure this outfit was connected with Gabby's Pizza & Buffet which recently closed at Fashion Place on Decker Boulevard.

  1. Dutch Square has become a black hole that sucks everything down to oblivion.

It is sad to see a nice mall trying to survive on mom & Pop start up businesses that sink their time and fortune into a dream only to see is slide away.

D’avino’s was super pizza! Just could not make it with no client base!

Never ate at Gabbys however I just thought it funny a pizza place run by hispanics just did not seem like real Italian.

  2. @Kc I understand why you'd say that.

In the months leading into Walmart #4379 opened up at 1326 Bush River Road on May 9, 2007, people were hoping that Bush River Road would have new life. Certainly the Bush River Mall site has new life (which I am very thankful for b/c it looked so ugly for so long), but not much else like the folks working in the area had hoped. Case in point:

Kmart closed November 2009. Last time I was in that store, the intercom was producing feedback to lead me to think it was dying. The store looked mroe like I remember the Seven Oaks Shopping Center Kmart looking like in the 90s.

No one has moved into the former Key West Grill up the road. There is a tealish building that used to be a daycare that could stand to be razed and something new built but no takers just yet.

Dutch Square has lost Chick-Fil-A, Hallmark Stores, Dollar Tree, Maxway, Game Stop, Picadilly and Burger Time in recent years. Gabby's is the 3rd pizza operation to fold up in this one location. What could be next??

  3. Andrew --The intercom was producing feedback to lead me to think it was dying -- LoL

I have often wondered what was up with Key West Grill esp with Coca Cola posting a notice on the door trying to claim their property.

    Good post Andrew!!

  5. I rode around Dutch Square tonight and determined the following:

There is space next to Ruby Tuesday that someone could move in (like Walgreens) but I don't' know if there will be any takers anytime soon.

The signage on the Belk Building has completely been changed to the new logo. The actual Bush River Road sign is likely be changed before much longer but not 100% sure as to when except by the end of 2011.

Still not sure when the Belks at Richland and Columbiana Malls will get new signage but we shall see. If we don't see a changeover at the Richland Mall Belk it could very well be a sign that the mall itself is about to close down and get redeveloped.

On the Dutch Square Blvd. side of Dutch Square Mall, there was a tarp reading "Space Available" with a 1-800 number that is most likely connected to Phillips Edison and I was like "plenty of it."

  6. A long, long time ago, this was the only Chick-fil-a in South Carolina. Living in Greenville, it was a treat when I got to ride down to Columbia with my Dad because I knew we would stop at Dutch Square for lunch.

  7. @Tom: You mean the Chick-fil-a that was across from here (as seen in the first picture):

  10. folks, I just checked a little earlier on the status on this place and the signage has changed over and there were signs indicating there was wet paint....so this place could very well be becoming Stuft-Stuff sometime soon...

I don't know anything about an Egyptian restaurant but Stuft-Stuff appears to be about a taste of Egypt...but they didn't have their menu in yet so it'll be sometime after the new year when they open (so stay tuned)

  11. Hello everybody!! I am the owner of stuft-stuff. It has been a slow and long process so far. The mall's management are one of the worst that I have ever dealt with. I had to rebuild the hood and exhaust system, put a new air condition unit, add sinks, rewire the whole place and a lot of major repairs all out of my pocket. They will not pay to get their property fixed so it passes the inspection. Then you wonder why half of the place is empty? I hope I can get DHEC approval in the next week or so and start cooking by early March. I promise to have good food, good service at a reasonable price. See you all soon.

  13. Sam I might do that one day...I've been in Dutch Square several times in recent months keeping an eye out for it...if I could make one recommendation, it'd be to have a menu available where folks could pick it up and read over it for themselves ahead of time (it's something that would help me)

  15. Ok folks. I just tried Stuft-Stuff and let me tell you... it was incredible. The bouquet of flavors and the freshly baked pita were amazing. What a treat! The service was FAST and food was HOT and FRESH.

  18. I went through Dutch Square to figure out what was up with Stuft-Stuff and their signage indicates that they are closed for restructuring

  19. Stuft Stuff did close the Dutch Square location...they made a Facebook post about it two or three days ago, stating that they could no longer stay in business in that location. I take it to mean they are looking at other sites for relocating?

  20. Stuft-Stuff is the 4th restuarant to fold in this location in as many years.

One of the issues I think Dutch Square has is that most of the anchor stores have parking lots and people looking to shop in them can enter them from the outside without having to walk in the mall. I periodically walk the mall (mostly to connect with what people on here discuss) and it seems as if each time, you are in a crowd of less than 50-75 people.
