Charlie's Cue & Cushion / Eckerd Drugs / Rite Aid, 2708 Rosewood Drive: 2000s 11 comments
This isn't quite the post I thought I would be making. Here's the thing: I remember a local restaurant that was on this side of Rosewood Drive for many, many years. It was on my "someday" list though I didn't get to it and it was torn down after I moved out of town. The only anecdote I can remember about it right now was that in the late 80s, or maybe the 90s, USC had a famous football coach (whose name I can't remember, let's call him Freddie) commit to come coach the Gamecocks. The whole town was in a commotion, and this restaurant put up on their signboard: Freddie heard about our food!.
Then, of course, the Chicken Curse struck, and he reneged on the deal and decided not to come to Carolina -- leaving the restaurant flat-footed for a couple of days with a very ironic sign.
Anyway, I was pretty sure this was the spot, but the only thing I can see before the old building was torn down to put up the Eckerd's which became Rite Aid is a pool hall called Charlie's which tried several times (apparently with success in the end to get a liquor license).

UPDATE 10 August 2020: I have not noted it previously, but this Rite Aid closed as all the others did, and is now a Walgreens. Also added map icon, added Rite Aid to the title, updated tags.

"Charlie's" full name was "Charlie's Cue 'n Cushion." I played pool there a few times--my main memory is of the many "NO MASSE SHOTS" signs on the walls.

Charlie used to have great Halloween parties and he took lots of pictures that he put on the walls. I was very proud to be on his wall several times. I miss the place. There was a small Asian lady who made the cheeseburgers who I think is Charlie's wife. Great zero-pressure place to just hang out.
Close by on the same side of Rosewood was a funny shaped building with big front windows and the remains of a big 50s era sign shaped like a tail fin or something. It was Brown's restaurant for a short while before it and the cinder block building next to it were knocked down to put up the First Citizens bank that is there now in 2001. That other building was Superior Feet for a few years before they moved down the hill to Five Points, right next door to Group Therapy.

We spent many hours at Charlie's during the early 90s. It was a real pool hall, play by the hour, full size tables. It was an incredibly vibrant yet unrefined classic pool hall.

My Uncle was a partner in Charlie's Cue and Cushion in the early to mid-eighties. I used to love going there on Sundays when they were closed. He would work in the office, and my brother, cousins, and I would get to play pool and video games for free.
My mom invested in some stand up video games to put in there. We had Frogger, Tempest, and maybe Donkey Kong. Frogger was mine. Those things paid for themselves rather quickly.
Oh, and being a kid, it was always interesting to see what would be in the bathroom condom machine each week.palmettopanic

Charlie's cue and cushion was first on south main then north main and then on rosewood drive. the rosewood dr was open in 1974 and Charlie jabour sold it an retired in 1982. He lived till 2009 at he age of 97. He was the first person to bring the big modern billard parlor out into the open for ladies and gentlemen. He had the best burgers in town. I worked there when I was 12 years old in 1962.

Charlie's was an awesome place to hang out in the mid '90s. I used to go during the day on weekdays, and I would always see an older black gentleman in suspenders playing pool. One of the best shooters I have ever seen. I went one time to Charlie's on a Friday night, and an older white gentleman asked me if I wanted to come over to his table and play for a little money. I asked if he would be my opponent, and he said no, as he pointed to my possible opponent. It was the black gentleman with the suspenders. I chuckled a bit, went over and shook both men's hands, and told them that I respectfully declined. You can't hustle the hustler.

I spent many a night playing video games while my boyfriend played pool. He thought he was some kind of pool shark (not). many good memories and high scores on my games . it's a shame it's gone, we need more chill places like Charlies.

I think you may be talking about Dick Sheridan. He was a USC grad who enjoyed sucess at Furman and NC State before leaving coaching for health reasons.
