Damon's, 900 Senate Street: Early August 2010   7 comments

I've eaten at Damon's a few times, first I believe in Litchfield Beach at The Exchange in a space which is now a church, and later in Augusta. I'm not particularly interested in ribs, but as I recall they had good burgers and some sort of deep-fried onion-loaf. If I'm remembering correctly, the only thing I didn't like about the place was they had little teeny-tiny napkins that were really wash-cloths.

That's Damon's in general -- this particular Damon's I never got to. Given the location, if I was in the area and craving a burger, I would more likely cross the street to 5 Guys.

It is a nice location though, and it looks like they had a patio which would be very pleasant evenings this time of year. According to LoopNet, the building is being sold as a fully kitted out restaurant, and in fact the Damon's franchaise itself appears to be still available for the right offer.

UPDATE 31 March 2014 -- The place was demolished some time ago, and now is in preparation to be the new USC Alumni Association headquarters:

  1. Thru the years, Damon's has been know as Damon's Ribs or Damon's Grill or just Damon's. This site originally opened as a new concept they were doing called Damon's Clubhouse. Internally, parts of the restaurant were always called the "clubhouse". Shortly after opening they dropped the "Clubhouse" part of their name. All this could have played to their identity crisis. Then about 8 or so years ago, the City of Columbia was going to close it and bull doze it for part of the development they were doing. I knew some managers back then than jumped ship becasue the place was going to close due to eminent domain by the City. Somehow they survived that as well.

I ate there once right after it opened. Place was dead. Waitstaff standing around everywhere. Could not get seated and service was slow. Never went back. Until recently, it was in a forgot bar of the Vista. Also, local advertising was lacking so that you forgot the place was there. No real events coming on a steady basis to the Convention Center nor Colinial Center couldnt help pump life either.

  2. Yeah, the 'clubhouse' area had several screens of tv programs, and you could pick which audio you wanted to hear at your table. Before it was "Damon's" it was "The Red Pepper," an Chinese? restaurant, which kept running afoul of DHEC inspections. I think the family that ran it was actually from Cambodia.

  3. Wow. I forgot about the Red Pepper. I think it was supposed to be mostly Thai. It wasn't open very long, in terms of things.

Damon's was open well before Jillian's and was one of the hot places to go in the Vista. As Columbia is, the new places are crowded and the old places linger on with their regulars. Lots more competition in the Vista, now.

Rumor at one point was that Buffalo Wild Wing was going to open in the Damon's space.

  4. I had forgotten about the Red Pepper as well. I do remember now that they always recevied horrible DHEC reviews, and I seem to remember an outbreak of food poisoning. We went a few times to Damon's. Once after church, once at Vista Lights, and once a few months ago. I also remember the city of Columbia was going to "condemn" it to close via the imminent domain clause. Not too cool. I think there is a Damon's in South Myrtle Beach that looks over the ocean.

  5. I went to this Damon's once, at lunch time. The place was deserted, the food was mediocre, and the service was absolutely glacial. I'm not sure if the kitchen was actually butchering the pigs in the back in order to get the ribs, but it should not have taken an hour and a half to eat lunch.

  6. I seem to remember that this was one of the locations of Lee Atwater's Red Hot & Blues Restaurants back in the early 90's before it became the Red Pepper.
