Sato Japanese Steak & Sushi House, 1999 Beltline Boulevard: 4 October 2015 (temporary) 6 comments
I had not noticed until recently that Sato on Beltline took major flood damage and is closed for repair. In retrospect it makes sense as the restaurant is located at the low point of Beltline as it comes down from Forest Drive and before it starts back up towards Trenholm Road. Looking at google maps, it appears that the nearby creek which presumably did the damage is called Orphanage Branch, a name I can't ever recall hearing.

Sidney is right, it needs updating. 6 months ago I was with a party of 12 and we all had a great time. The food was good and filling and the hibachi chef was entertaining.

My big beef is that you have the traffic signal at Falcon Drive primarily to allow for better traffic flow in/out of AC Flora High School but this driveway isn't synched up to it...I feel like this would give easier exit to those at Sato as well as Zaxby's...

This as been a Japanese restaturant since the mid 1980s, but it was orginally called 'Kyoto.' Before that it was some other places, mayb something called the 'Filling Station?'

We used to go when it was called Kyoto's in the '80's. We had most birthday dinners there in our family for several years. Loved the food and the atmosphere during birthdays. The owners used to take polaroid pictures of you on your birthday and put them up on the walls in the entrance area. They finally took them all down once there was no more wall space. I loved Kyoto's food. It was the first Hibatchi style restaurant in the area, if not Columbia.
I believe the creek is called Orphanage Branch as it runs by the old Carolina Children's Home orphanage further up Trenholm towards Gervais.palmettoconnection

This place really needed a makeover inside. Hopefully they do it up right. The same owners also own Wasabi on Hardscrabble.
