Sammi's Deli still has a Broad River Road location in Irmo near the Publix plaza, but this one in front of the old Intersection Center has changed hands and will become a Nick's.

Nick's seems to be using the Lizard's Thicket "hermit crab" strategy of moving into buildings which were already set up as restaurants. This will be the third new location they have opened or will open over the past year. They have already opened in the old Taco Bell location on Decker and appear close to opening in the old Tony O's Pizza on Saint Andrews.

UPDATE 17 September 2012 -- The comments have reminded me this used to be a Taco Cid so I have added that to the post title. I have also copied commenter Melanie's matchbook scans here:

  1. Wasn't there a Sammi's in Widewater Square back in the early 90's? There was a deli in the little strip right next to St. Andrews Rd. Used to stop by there often when I lived across the street at St. Andrews Commons. They had some pretty good sandwiches, but my favorite will always be Sub Station II's #19!!!!!

  3. I believe this was the first Taco Cid location in Columbia. I remember going here in the early '70s. Years later they opened elsewhere--West Columbia, Lexington, Main St., and Decker Blvd.

  6. Yes, that was their first location - I remember it well, because that's where I went on my first date back in 1973. Good memories!

  7. If I'm not mistaken there's still a Taco Cid on Knox Abbot Drive, on the right just before you get to the K-Mart. I guess that's the last one in Columbia now?

  12. There was a Taco Cid restaurant on Two Notch Rd, near the intersection of Two Notch and Beltline. It was there in the early 1970's it was a popular date night destination for HS students in 1971. The Charleston Highway location has recently moved to Platt Springs Rd. yes, they still have the t-shirts!

  13. Man that brings back memories. I worked there at Taco Cid from 1992 to 1995. I was the long haired punk kid with his hair tuck through his hat. I had some great times there. Anytime I hear The Scorpions "Im Still Loving You" I think about that place. I knew that jukebox by heart.

  14. I worked for Sonny Jonson and his dear wife in the 80s. What a blessing to work for such good people. They taught me how to be of service to my fellow man and you ladies!blessings sent c. Fleming
