I did some driving around in parts of the state I don't usually get to during July. I think I've featured a few of those closings already, and there will be some more in the future. As far as I know, I had never been down this stretch of road in Bennettsville before, on SC-9 heading towards Dillon.

I honestly don't think I've ever eaten in a Huddle House either, though it's possible I did in Fernandina once. Anyway, I've always thought of them as sort of a discount Waffle House, and the, almost uniformly bad, reviews for this place don't dissuade me from that notion. (To be fair, there are some positive reviews). At any rate it sounds to me they were having extreme post-COVID staffing issues, and I think you can disregard the the Now Hiring signage.

  1. Every fall I take a tour through several small mountain towns through NC and GA and the Huddle Houses there offer a dynamite breakfast. Columbia used to have one on Rosewood Drive I believe.

  2. Yeah it was where Marco's Pizza is now. Same building. I remember eating at Huddle House in Hilton Head. I like it, seemed exactly like a Waffle House.

  3. Huddle House hasn't done so well in Texas. Their stores are few and far between. They opened a location in Lockhart, Texas that closed after a few years (2011-2014, don't quote me on that) and they had one near Cleveland, TX that had most of the signage up but abandoned before it was even finished.

  4. In TX, Huddle House probably cannot draw enough customers from the Dairy Queen that is in every small town.

There was a Huddle House in Ruston, LA when I was in college and it was always packed.
