Well, I was sorry to see this. Hooligan's has been a long-time presence at Trenholm Plaza, and has continued the ice cream tradition that started in that location with Edisto Farms Dairy.

I didn't go to Hooligan's that often, but they were dependable, and had excellent ice (the chewy kind) for the drinks. At one time, when my eldest niece was in her terrible twos, Hooligan's was the only place my sister could take her out as it was kid friendly, and cranky-kid friendly.

A friend of mine dragged me out there several times during my DSI days on Forrest drive. Good ruebens. Like several here, I don't think I went back since the beginning of the 90s. Parking was always a little crowded there.

Hooligans has been there forever. I used to eat there all the time when I was a young lad. I remember when Ivan was just an employee. This was the mid to late eighties. I'm sure he was squeezed out by the current owners of Trenholm Plaza when the lease was up, knowing how much they could get for that location. The trend seems to be going to more upscale dining in TP from what I have seen when I'm in town. Short and sweet good-bye, unlike La Bag Lady note. Probably a little sourness in Ivan's. RIP to probably the last remaining connection (except maybe the PO) to the old school Plaza.

The Forest Acres PO (based on some older Trenholm Plaza listings that have been posted here) is the only original tenatn still operating at Trenholm Plaza

I don't know exactly what happened but I theorize that one of the following two happened:

Edens had a lease rate that Holligan's thought was more than they could have afforded (this is common in the world of commercial real estate).

The owners were ready to retire and there wasn't anyone suitable to pass the business on down to (this what happened to Lourie's)...sometimes owners burn out from the long hours and need to get out of it.

It's also possible that the two converged to make this happen...

Ivan's mother died earlier this year. That may--or may not-- have affected his decision to close.

We used to go there often. They had good lunch food and burgers, until one time a few years ago after eating there we got violently ill. Never been back. Still hate that they are gone
