Well, it appears that Pop's NY Pizza on Harden Street is no more. However, it also appears that this was more a re-flagging than a complete reboot as the new operation just switches out the first word to become Liberty's NY Pizza.

In either case, I've never been enthralled with the New York style of pizza, so I never got around to Pop's and though I wish them luck, probably won't to Liberty's either.

  1. Man, it's been so long since I have been to 5 Points that I had never heard of this place. I see all these bars and restaurants in pubs like the Free Times and I wonder, "Where the heck is that"? My old stand-by's were always Group Therapy (only during happy hour), Yesterday's, Salty Nut (good burgers) and the Village Idiot (good pizza). It's been about 5 years since I went down there with any regularity. It's just not the same anymore. I miss the days of Rockefella's, The Elbow Room and whatever greasy spoon was located in the old Frank's hot dog place on the corner of Harden & Green St. Those were some fun times!!!

  2. Poor Pop's. My favorite pizza place in Columbia, and one of the few that actually produced a pie close to that found in NYC. I hope Liberty's is as good as their predecessor.

  3. I remember being psyched when Pop's opened up in late 2006, that I could get a close facsimile of NY Pizza in Columbia w/o travelling to either Schiano's or Antonina's . The Pizza wasn't great, but better than Papa Johns, and they delivered to W. Columbia.

Then the Free Times ran an expose on the owner of the place, and I couldn't bring myself to give the man any more of my money. Do a google on either Bey, or Madison Rutherford.

  4. I'm not the most knowledgeable person about NY vs. Chicago pizza but I once spoke with a lady who is married to someone with roots in the Northeast person of the country that felt Pop's wasn't exactly what she thought of as NY style pizza...

I remember Keven Coehen doing spots for this when he was on WVOC as well...

  6. The Parthenon folks are out at Zorba's Express in the Publix plaza on Broad River Road near I-26. It's too for for me to go often, but they'e got the same great Parthenon pizza!

  7. Ted, so you are saying you don't like Dano's pizza? That is pretty close to real NY style pizza. Never cared for Pop's because it was just bad pizza, certainly not NY style.

  8. In the 80's there was a place off Leesburg Road called Top Hats Pizza, they had a really good NY style pizza. I guess people from around here are not use to that, and Top Hats went out of business. I'm still going to check out Uno's, as Ted suggested, one day when I get to that side of town , for a deep dish. I have been eating Pizza Huts pan pizza, it's just okay.

  9. Dano's-- I only went in there once, and didn't end up eating. It was barely a sitdown site, and didn't have any fresh brewed ice tea, which makes it a nogo for me.

  10. Hmmmm. That may have been a while ago then before I moved back to Columbia. They have two rooms of booths and a nice size bar. I usually get the ice tea and like it alot (both sweet and unsweet) but I grant you are probably more of an aficionado in that area than I. Good beer selection and good Greek salad too.

    BTW - Love your site.

  11. As I was going through five points last night I noticed that Liberty's Pizza is now gone and the place is empty.

  12. They were the only restaurant in Columbia where I could find fried Oreos!

  13. I was thinking Pop's had opened prior to me graduating from USC, which would have been the end of 2005, but apparently I am mistaken. I recall going there once not too long after it had opened. The pizza was decent, but I didn't think much of the restaurant not serving water to drink.

For those reasons, to a small degree, but mostly the fact that I soon moved away from campus, that was my only visit to Pop's. Now, after learning about the sketchy owner, I am glad I never gave Pop's another cent.

For the record, THIS was my pizza place of choice during those years:
