Pizza Man, 341 South Woodrow Street: 15 October 2017 7 comments
To a first approximation, Pizza Man on Woodrow seemed like the kind of place I would like: Open late & serving pizza.
In the actual event, I only ended up going there once. The pizza was a style I didn't really care for, and was a bit overcooked, and the place was so dim that I could hardly see a page while I waited for my order. I probably should have given it another chance, but in the end never got around to it.
Here is a State story on the (then upcoming) closing, and here is a story on the final auction.

UPDATE 20 June 2018 -- Wow, this seems pretty quick! The Doctor's Care is up and running in the old Pizza Man spot:

I came here for the first time 5 years ago when I moved to town and was looking for a walking distance pub. I was going to order some pizza, but noticed they had Philly Cheesesteaks made with American cheese. Having just moved from Philadelphia with knowledge that most cheesesteaks outside Philly are made with provolone, I was excited and was so blown away by how good it was, I called out the cook to shake his hand. I started coming by there once every week or two to pick one up.
I actually didn't try the pizza until the 4th time I went there, which was a good thing because it tasted like a bunch of cheap mozz on some saltine crackers, and if I had tried it first, I wouldn't have come back. Ironic that the worst thing on the menu was the pizza, but I'm sure it had its following.
Came by one day a few months ago to pick up my favorite taste of home after the phone wouldn't answer, and found out from some construction guys inside that the owner had died and they had closed down. Really bummed me out, because it seemed like a lot of friendly locals hung out there and loved the owner. The outside mural was certainly a staple.

I'd stop by there to hang out with friends, the beer was always cheap. Truth be told, they had one of the best breakfasts in town. I'd drop by there for breakfast once in a while.

Before I forget, the property was Columbia's first 7 Eleven, many years ago.

Pizza Man was my pizza place of choice during the mid-to-late 2000s. I always thought the cracker-like crust was interesting. Sure, I have been to other pizza places that serve thin-crust pizza, but somehow Pizza Man's was always different...and superior.
Always liked the vibe, too. I remember having this one particular waitress the first couple of times my friend and I ate at Pizza Man. She was nice and pretty, but something always looked slightly off about her. We would refer to her in later conversation as "the disproportionate waitress." Now that I think back to her, I would simply say she had wonky tits. :-D
I would drop by on occasion...to play the pinball machine! The pizza was not my favorite but to be fair, the first time I ate it....it made me sick as a dog.
Anyway sorry to see it go.
