This was the first location for Piggly Wiggly store number 102.

If I have the story straight, then this store closed in 2001, moved and re-opened in the former Harris Teeter at 4350 Saint Andrews Road (and then closed for good).

After that, the Display Center appliance store moved in, and closed on 30 November 2011, leaving an interesting assortment of items behind.

This location is directly across Jamil Road from former Hilltop Restaurant, and in the same plaza as the former Capitol News Stand.

UPDATE 4 September 2012: Fixed typo in DC closing date.

UPDATE 21 November 2020: Added map icon.

  1. Fruit still looks good...

Wasn't there a Display Center in Triangle City at one time? I think it is where the sewing machine store is now.

  3. According to the note in the window, 30 November 2011.

    The pig moved in 2001 I think thus "2001 / 30 November 2011"

  4. Ted is right in that Piggly Wiggly left this spot in early July 2001.

tonkatoy, I remember the Display Center you mentioned and it is now Creative Sewing Center at 519 12th Street.

  5. I used to live of Jamil for about five years and went into Display Center once. It was a huge store and nearly deserted. I drove by at least twice a day to and from work and always wondered how it stayed in business with hardly any customers. In fact, I drove by there this past weekend and it looked like there were cars in the parking lot so I thought it was still hanging on and I told my wife there'd be a closing on that one soon. I'm surprised it closed in Nov as it did look open last weekend.

  6. When the PW opened, it was considered one of the nicest and biggest in the chain.

  7. I had a very good experience buying a couple of appliances (a very big deal around our humble house) from Display Center, so I miss 'em.

  8. We bought several appliances from them over the years. They always seemed more helpful and knowledgeable than anyone at the 'big box' stores.

  9. Hey Ted, I noticed in the main post that you said Display Central closed on 30 November 2001 when it should be 2011

  11. I believe that this Display Center was originally located where Greene's liquor store is now off of Piney Grove Rd. This was a nice store with a great selection and very helpful staff.

  12. This was built as a Winn Dixie. There was also a Revco in there, as well as Ski South. There was also a McDonald's in an outparcel.

  13. There was a Display Center in Triangle City. It may have been the first one in town or they had more than one location at that time, I don't know. I did do business with them in Triangle City back in the 1980's. They repaired a microwave that I purchased in 1984. Back then microwaves were not cheap, not like the disposable ones available now.
I think I paid close to $700.00 for that Microwave. I did go into the store on Jamil Road once looking for an under the counter Ice Maker. The size I was looking for is as high as a dishwaher and about half as wide. They seemed to lean more towards the high end appliances and the price of the under counter ice maker was around $1500.00. I remember asking the sales clerk "why so much?" They had whole refridgerators for less than that.

  14. Oops! Got my dates wrong. My Wife reminded me that we purchased the Microwave in 1980 or 81. It was an Amana Radar Range. Must have weighed a hundred pounds. All stainless steel inside and out. I never did figure out how that didn't have some affect while heating. I remember one time leaving a fork in the food I was warming up. That got my attention.

  15. I believe it was an Eckerd Drugs not a Revco. The Revco was down the street at the Cloisters of Whitehall. That store later became CVS and moved to I-20 and Bush River. I believe the Eckerd's moved down St. Andrews and was taken over by Rite Aid.

  16. @ED, the Eckerd that used to be next door to that moved to 3100 Broad River Road sometime in the 2000-03 timeframe. It closed somewhere around 2005 One of the comments on the page explains what lead to its closure.

Revco was indeed at the Clusters of Whitehall until their 1997 acquisition by CVS Pharmacy. At the time of their acquisition, they their current location at Bush River Road and Outlet Pointe Boulevard was built.

  17. @ Ed. We may be talking about two places. I was not clear in my original post. When I said "This" I was commenting on your post about the Display Center being originally located where Green's is now. The Revco was located in the strip mall that was once a Winn Dixie, then became a Display Center, and is now Green's. Eckerd Drugs was in the strip mall that was originally Piggly Wiggly, then became a Display Center.

  18. This place is undergoing asbestos treatment.

    21 Dec 12 at 6:00 pm

  19. It appears that the asbestos treatment is complete and now the following is going on:

    - facade with the Display center lettering is being replaced
    - building on the inside has been ripped to the studs and concrete block inside
    - glass doors and windows have been removed
    - ceiling has been removed

A sign along the road indicates that a Charlotte-based company called Myers & Chapman is working on this project

    ** stay tuned **

  20. Further facade removal to the right (towards the side with EZ Bingo) is now in progress, deepening the mystery of what's happening here...

  21. the facade that once contained the Display Center lettering is gone...

the doors are being removed and there are steel studs appearing to form the foundation of a new entrance

facade on either side is now being removed as well.

I am eagerly awaiting news as to what this is to become...

  25. I had several visions for this site as follows during the construction:

Badcock furniture (moving from across the street so Badcock's current space could join with Ladie's Choice Fitness's old space to become Harris Teeter)

Harris Teeter itself struck me as a possilibity but I wondered if it had the size they were seeking.

It didn't take me long to rule out Kroger due to my understanding as to why their former 817 St. Andrews Road location closed.

I thought of Whole Foods but felt that if that's what it was to become, it would have been announced with greater fanfare than it was.

It seemed to be too big for Trader Joe's.

AC Moore's departure from Harbison Center lead me to wonder if this was in the works from their need to leave Harbison Center.

I even considered déjà vu in the idea of it becoming an upgraded Piggly Wiggly.

The whole site is too small to be a Costco despite the intense interest there is in having one in Columbia.

Then finally the signage announcing it was to be a chef'store finally was posted...

  26. You can find Elswick-Chiropractic on facebook

  27. I remember there being a Greenbacks redeemable store in the area now occupied by a Japanese restaurant. It was the only one of its kind I remember visiting once or twice.

  28. When I was a kid my Mom collected all those stamps. Greenbax, S&H and Top Value. We had the catalogs all over the house and she was always picking up something from them. I vaguely remember a redemption center in one of the stores. It might have been the Pig on St. Andrews. Can't really remember.
