Wildewood Centre Drive: 2000s   2 comments

I wasn't really looking for Wildewood Centre Drive per se, but was trying (unsuccessfully) to get to another location which will be a post someday soon. However, what I found back there was kind of interesting in a depressing way.

Wildewood Centre Drive intersects Clemson Road just north of I-20, and thereafter parallels I-20 stretching west from Clemson Road.

I parked my car at a medical building and walked almost to the end of the road. This is the view looking back up the road (facing east):

Note the suburban sidewalk, now washed over with erosion. In fact there is a lot of erosion from washouts that haven't been taken care of in a couple of years.

This is the non-paved continuation of the road after the ending traffic circle. It continues on into the woods a little way until it runs into the next property:

This is standing in the woods, looking back east at the end of Wildewood Centre Drive. Note the optomistic infrastructure in the form of a fire hydrant far from any building:

This is walking east from the end of the road back to the part which was actually built. Notice the island in the middle of the street. I believe this marks the end of the commercial area and was intended to separate a residential area, which would have been gated:

I wonder how SCBT feels about all the financing they provided now?:

Here is a closer view of the island divider. Note the metal arms:

I believe these gates would have originally met in the middle of the street at those arms, blocking access to the unbuilt, west, portion of Wildewood Centre Drive. Presumably after the build out they would have been replaced by some sort of keypad access gates as in Bellclave:

Continuing east, part of this building is actually occupied by, I believe, a urology clinic:

There is also a working school back here:

Again continuing east, we come to the commercial buildings which were built out but almost completely unoccupied:

The buildings are on the block soon. Here's the story in The State:

Remember this? It's back there too:

  1. This is sad, I imagine all plans for the development went up in smoke with the onset of the real estate meltdown and '08 economic crisis.

I like Dunkin Donuts but hey even the poster-child of over-extension Starbucks has been shuttering places as of late.

  2. This particular Dunkin Donuts was one of 3 area locations that were almost all set to open but something fell apart with the franchise owner. There was one in Red Bank that was in the same boat as this one that is now a Verizon Wireless store.

Starbucks did have to close locations but I think part of their probelm is that they had to dadgum many of them. The Village at Sandhill is 300 acres and within that 300 acre space, there are 3 Starbucks locations (I kid you not). I don't drink coffee so I don't understand the attractiveness behind this but do we really need them every 100 acres?? They at one point (≈2003-06) announced they were building ≈2,000 new locations and Jay Leno was like "Where are they opening these up, inside Starbucks?"
