Hard Knox Grill, 1000 Knox Abbott Drive: 9 October 2010   18 comments

Posted at 2:10 am in Uncategorized

I've written about this building before in the closing for Black Bull Restaurant. Hard Knox Grill was the immediate follow-on operation in that building, and was, I believe a rock-and-roll nightclub as well as a restaurant. I say "I believe" because it's another of the many places in and around town that I had a vague intention to get to sometime, but never did until it was too late.

At any rate, looking at the posted operating hours, it's probably just as well I never drove over there for lunch. That sign also appears to tell a story in that apparently at some point full-week operations were cut back to weekend-only mode.

The stack of Free Times newspapers sitting by the door is the "October 13-19 2010" issue. Those would have been dropped off on the morning of Wednesday 13 October. Since they were never taken inside to the rack in the foyer, but there is no pile from the previous week, I think it's safe to say the place operated Friday & Saturday 8 & 9 October, but not since.

  2. I never got around to checking it out either. Also Rust which was closed seems to have reopened with new management. The other night noticed lights n activity in it and then checked the website:
    http://www.rustbusinessclub.com/

It's calling itself a business social club now whatever that means

  3. Well, Rust may be open again, but I think that web page dates from 2008..

  4. I went and saw Unknown Hinson there a month or so ago. It was a descent place to see a band.

  6. I went to see the Unknown Hinson too, and had a great time. It is a shame they closed, because I had been there several times and always had good food, service, and prices. The bands and shows were good too. Wish Knox Abbott would build up a little again.

  7. This was owned by the family of it's predecessors - Captain George's Seafood & The Black Bull. Apparently, the Koutrakos family allowed their relative Pete take a stab at running the place. Once again, it was a failure. I think they should consider getting some outside help in re-opening this restaurant. Their ideas seem to be too far fetched and the restaurants continue closing....

  9. I'd think a seafood place would have a hard time cometing with the Red just a couple of blocks away, but Captain George's seemed to do OK there.

  13. Maybe they were firing up the grill for the first time! I rode by this evening and their "Grand Opening" sign was up and I doubt there was an empy parking place.

  14. This building was originally a Western Steer Family Steakhouse (Not Western Sizzlin which was across the street a couple of blocks west). There were at least three Western Steer locations in Columbia. This one on Knox Abbott; one on Garners Ferry where Eric San Jose is now; and one on St Andrews Road at I-26.

  15. There was also a Western Steer at the intersection of Trenholm and Decker, and one in Lexington right about where SC 6 and US 378 merge.

  16. I remember this Western Steer was the first place -at least in West Columbia where I grew up- that had the all-you-can-eat Mega Bar type thing.

  17. I'll add Western Steer but since The Black Bull came first, I'll add it to that one.

  18. Never made it to this place. Seems like it would have been neat. You can imagine what I referred to this place as.
