Paul's Philadelphia Eatery, 931 Senate Street: late August 2010   10 comments

Posted at 11:34 pm in Uncategorized

Paul's Philadelphia Eatery was on Senate Street in the Vista, in the same building as 5 Guys and The Flying Saucer, right next to the former Alan Ray's Salon, and on the same block as the former Damon's.

Once you get past "Philly Chese-steak", my knowledge of Philly cuisine is a bit thin, and although I do get to Very's on Two Notch once or twice a month, I never managed to make it to Paul's.

I suspect the environment for restaurants in this part of the Vista is a bit mixed. It's not Gervais Street, so you're not going to get the casual passers-by. 5 Guys does well, because people specifically go looking for a 5 Guys.

  1. It wasn't a bad place, although it wasn't anything special either. They should have made a deal with Flying Saucer to run their kitchen as the Flying Saucer's food is pretty bad.

  2. I mostly agree w/CDG. I went here one time shortly after it opened and was not impressed. FS is mainly beer & snacks. I don't expect a real meal there but from the hype this place got it wasn't worth the price. So, I never went back.

  3. Does anyone know what actually happened here? They were here one day and gone the next. They even had a nice write up in The State recently. Their fan page on Facebook doesn't have any info and their website is gone as well.

  4. Went when they first opened. Worst Philly Cheese I ever had. No cheese. When I told The waitress she blew Me off. Went back to try the Pizza. Worse than the sandwich. And No parking

  5. I'm with ChiefDanGeorge, nothing special, and the prices were Vista prices. Only went there once. For Philly Steak&Cheese, only one place to go and that's D.L.'s in Irmo. They are absolutely blinding.

  6. I ate there 3 times, but only because I had 2 gift certificates to burn -- otherwise it would've been just the once. Having actually had an authentic cheesesteak sandwich from Pat's King of Steaks in Philly, I have to honestly say that while Paul's fell miserably short, the closest sandwich to the real thing I've found in Columbia is at Pop's New York Pizza in 5 Points. If you haven't been to Pop's, do yourself a favor and give their Philly a try. You will have to deal with the slacker college-kid staff, but if you can get past that, your taste buds will recognize the reward... ;-)

  7. I just bought tiramisu for my birthday dinner and it was hard as a rock- the guy getting it out of the fridge had to feel it. I went to go get another adn they're closed... When did they close...

  8. I always wondered why this place didnt do better - I guess it got no help from the places next door. Saucer is always pretty packed and Five Guys seems to do well. Even Monterrey's on the corner looks pretty busy most of the time. I go to the Saucer a fair amount and totally agree with the first comment about the food there - pretty lousy. Paul's hosted some kind of dance party on their patio throughout the summer, which I thought was weird. Even they were poorly attended.

  9. They sold the place back in August...the place did ok even with the economy, but new owners are going to turn it into a sports bar. I will miss the real phillies.

  10. Paul's was fantastic!! For those that think Pats and Genos are good you might as well get steakums. Gooey Louie's is the best in Philly.
Very's is good here but was better when they opened 24 tears ago (we ate there the night they opened and have alot since)

DL's in Ballentine is great too, perhaps best in the area but they mash the sandwich down and being cash only is a drag but their prices are great.

If you want a true philly steak up there you need to go to Kutztown, PA and eat at Mark's.

    I am a cheesesteak conniseur.
