Goody's, 2307 Augusta Road: 2008   6 comments

Posted at 11:23 pm in closing

There were three Goody's locations in Columbia, one on Two Notch Road, one on Bower Parkway and a final one here on Augusta Road in West Columbia. As mentioned in the other posts, the chain went Chapter 11 in 2008 and closed all their Columbia stores.

The one on Bower Parkway has has a couple of temporary tenants like a "Giant Book Sale" and one of those indoor flea-market type things they have at Jamil from time to time. The one on Two Notch is going to have Joann Fabrics as a new tenant, but as far as I know this one near the West Columbia Wal-Mart and I-26 has never had anything set up shop, even on a temporary basis.

The Loopnet listing says there's 31,609 square feet that can be subdivided, but it's been two years already, so I'm not going to hold my breath.

  1. Part of the issue with this location is that the shopping center attached to it is losing a lot of tenants left and right.

  2. This site was one of the smaller Wal-Marts in the 90's before the supercenter was built next door. The Bi-Lo is still one of the original tenants.

  3. Changing demographics plus busted housing bubble(aka bad economy) = this.

The area is becoming what two notch became (before it saw any improvement). Old Bush River and St.Andrews have been struggling for years, even when the economy was at it's height.

What a dysfunctional area (I drive through it everyday).

  4. Goody's and Hobby Lobby are/were what was Walmart when it first opened in the late 80's or very early 90's in West Columbia.. They closed the smaller Walmart when the NEW Super Walmart opened back in 2000.

  5. It's my understanding that the Super WalMart down the road has one of the highest recitivitism rates in the state of SC

This Goody's somehow outlived the other two which surprised a couple of folks I knew but the chain ultimately folded (ala Service Merchandise, Brendle's, Phar-Mor and plenty of others)
