Well, I had to go out to mail something the other day, and decided I might as well check out the Steak n' Shake in Blythewood.

There has already been some discussion of this in various comments, with commenter Sidney putting this down to the classic real-estate trifecta: Location, location, location!. I'm sure that has something to do with it, but I believe the chain is having trouble in general. In particular, I know they exited Myrtle Beach last year and were having lots of problems even before the current mess.

The linked article says they closed 107 restaurants that "could not deliver excellent customer service" in 2019, so something is going on. Wikipedia says they adopted a new franchaise model in 2018, so perhaps that is not working out for them. Apparently some restaurants will re-open as counter-service only operations -- I do not know if this one will be among that group.

I have never eaten at a Steak n' Shake -- Columbia's only other one closed years ago, and has been razed -- but it has always been on my list to try someday. Oh well.

  1. In case y'all have seen my handle on here before, the panic part refers to the band Widespread Panic, not 'cause I'm worried. However, it does seem cryptically appropriate these days. I'm from Cola, but live in the burbs of ATL now.
Anywho, Steak 'n shake burgers, fries (shoestring type that you can just devour), and shakes are delish.
The restaurants around here in Atlanta have been having staffing issues as well, but my kiddos and I love it. Prices are comparable to fast food places, but food is much much better and orders come out fast.

  2. You aren't missing a lot by stopping here. The Harbison one gave me a really bad case of food poisoning.

  3. Darn already? Less than 2 years. Then again they do have many other restaurants that serve fries and burgers on killain road. Thats probably what did them in.

  4. Steak & Shake makes for a good meal in most places. Burgers are delicious and the selection of shakes is excellent. This one started off well, and kids loved their first experience. Subsequent visits went downhill, and the last time we went there, a worker had not showed up for work, and dirty dishes were on several tables surrounding us, from the moment we came in to when we left.
The location here really sucked, as you often couldn't even see it from the road if you weren't looking for it.

  5. Like Ted, I've encountered rumblings that Steak N Shake (as a company) isn't in the greatest of shape and that is liable to be a factor as to why this location folded...

  6. I ate a couple of times at the one in Harbison and was completely unimpressed. The food was not that great and over priced and the service just planed sucked. I later heard that there were issues at that location with poor management, which I have no trouble believing as on my last visit some one complained in person to the manager on duty who looked like he just came out of high school and could care less about the complaint.

  7. Just read an article that says the company is struggling and has closed over fifty locations this year so far.

  8. From the Franchise Mall:

How much does it cost to open a Steak n Shake Franchise?

The estimated investment required to open a Steak n Shake Franchise is between $672,000-$1,835,000.
There is an initial franchise fee of $25,000-$40,000 which grants you the license to run a business under the Steak n Shake name.

    Royalty Fee:
    5.5%

These poor franchise owners have lost everything.

  9. I actually liked the food. I first ate and enjoyed it at the Rockhill location. I don't understand how if they had all of these so-called issues why they would attempt to open another one, especially if it had anything to do with money. They young people definitely don't care about customer service and if the management doesn't, like so many of the other establishments no wonder it closed. The owners of these places should take some tips from the staff and training of Chick fila. They pay good, treat their employees well, and train them to be respectful and look presentable. I get tired of seeing sagging pants, and underwear mixed with my order.
