I was not aware of Tin Lizzy's, else I might have gone sometime. The menu looks decent.

When I first heard that it had closed, and was at 700 Gervais Street, I went to the building you see in the first shot, which is not, in fact, the location. Apparently 700 Gervais encompasses the whole arc of buildings around the parking lot there. WLTX has a (very) little more.

Apparently, the only non-Georgia locations of Tin Lizzy's left are in Greenville and Tallahassee.

UPDATE 11 May 2021 -- It's now Crafty Crab (although nobody has changed the streetside marquee yet):

  1. We ate there a few times, and the food was very good. It was different from the traditional Columbia Mexican fare with the numbered combo meals - probably more Tex Mex. The service was just ok. My only complaint was that they had live music every time we went, so it was hard to have a conversation. Like everything else in the Vista, I wonder if it just wasn't enough to support the rent.

  2. Didn't eat @ Tin Lizzy's but I'd heard the food was indeed worth the trip. Also heard the service was inconsistent and, as Heath stated, the music got annoying.

My question is more about the Vista in general. I've lived here 20 years. I've watched the Vista grow and change. Vista rent is off the charts. Rent throughout Columbia is getting more than a bit insane. $1200/month for a 1 bedroom? I wonder when a proverbial tipping point will come and we'll begin to see empty storefronts like out at Bower Parkway....

  3. My theory is that rent downtown is rising because of the cost of living in on-campus housing keeps going up. I just looked on USC’s website and the largest dorm on campus, 650 Lincoln (largest meaning most students, not most space), is $4615 a semester which works out to about $1150 a month. That is for a single bedroom (108 sq ft) and you share a BR with one other person and a common area and living room with 3 other people. Other on campus housing ranges from $2775-$5750 per semester. I guess a lot of students feel like they would rather live off campus than pay $1000 a month.

  4. I had the opposite experience from most commenters. I found the service (especially bar staff) fairly good, but the food quality, especially after the menu change, was terrible. The live music was also a negative for me. Too many garage band cover groups. How many more times do "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" had to be played in Columbia bars/restaurants?

  5. Your hypothesis is more than likely right, Ed. It's the definition of chutzpah to charge the kind of rent some places in Columbia do. Then again, that's why I bought a house.

If one looks out at the shops at Bower Parkway, you see a LOT of empty storefronts....because of the rent. I wonder if that will happen in the Vista, for the same reason.

  6. In addition to increasing rents and labor shortage, two other trends are negative for restaurants. First is decreasing household size. Basically, there are fewer and smaller families today, so "family" style restaurants are getting squeezed. Also, younger people are less inclined to dine in, especially with so many delivery options available. Which makes all that square footage kind of superfluous.

  7. About a year ago I was looking into opening a retro-80s arcade in the Vista and the asking price for a building lease at 3 separate locations was so high there was just no margin for profits.

  8. I always wondered what they served. I thought it was mostly a bar. Ha, I would have tried it.
