@Ted - was the old Xanadu home on the same stretch of road? Several years ago I was in Orlando for a seminar and played hooky one day and just wandered around looking for all of the 'strange' things that Florida is known for. I posted a few pics on here a couple of years ago in response to one of your trips. I need to get back down there. Unfortunately, it will have to come out of my pocket, since my employer is too cheap to send anyone out of town any more.....

@Homer, I'm not familiar with that building. The most notable thing around there I'm aware of other than the Twistee Treat is a huge "orange" dome building.

@ted - it was in Kissimmee. It was touted as the home of the future. It was a pretty popular tourist trap in the 80's. They tore it down in '05. There's a little write up on http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/32774

There are several videos on Youtube. Some from back in the days when it was in operation and some taken by brave souls wandering through it in it's final days of disrepair. Just serach for 'xanadu home' or 'xanadu house'.

I loved those Xanadu houses! We'd go by the one in Gatlinburg all the time years ago when we did regular family vacations there. Never actually toured it, but... it was a regular site out the window (my family wasn't big on tourist attractions). It's amazing how the internet has kept those places alive. Ted, definitely check out the videos. Xanadu is kind of like Epcot was 30 years ago. It was a predictor of "the future," but once the future went steamrolling by, it was either adapt or shut down. Epcot adapted (it's now more about science and the environment), but poor Xanadu became a home for the homeless and the urban explorer. And now they're gone.

@Ted - is that Twistee Treat in Kissimmee? I stopped by a place that looked just like this last time I was in that area.
