Kicks Just Keep Gettin' Harder To Find

The State reports the upcoming closing of Kicks Shoes on Devine after 15 years in business. It seems that the changing retail market for shoes, which includes strong online competition, coupled with the lingering 2007 recession are the main factors.

3 August will be the store's final day.

  1. In the 1970's, if I remember correctly, there was a business located here called "Shooters Circle". A gun store.

  2. Rick, you're close. Shooter's Circle was actually located at 2821 Devine Street, on the other side of the road a block west. I bought a shotgun there in late 1987 and still have the receipt. I had forgotten about it until your post.

  3. @59 Ford - Thanks for setting that straight. Seems like it was in the late 70's the last time I remember them there, not that they were not there longer, it's just to the best of my memory.

Also glad I was able to bring back a memory for you.
And it's a good thing you saved that receipt, one never knows...

  4. Ted notes the change in retailing of shoes toward online sales. I have never understood online shoe (and clothing) sales. I mean each pair of shoes is made to fit very differently, even within the same brand. Wouldn't you continue to buy your shoes from a brick and mortar store where you can try them on and make sure they fit before you purchase them? I'm not saying online sales haven't hurt the store, I really don't know. I'm just saying that I would never buy a pair of shoes from the internet for the previously stated reason.

  5. Well, I wear Sebago Docksides, which are pretty much unchanged for the last 40 years. I know my size, and when one pair wears out, I order an identical pair from Amazon..

  6. If you buy from somewhere like Zappo's, they have a good return policy with free return shipping so if you buy a pair that don't fit, you're out nothing but a couple of days without new shoes until the replacements arrive. Between that and sizing reviews (true to size, runs small in the toebox, etc.) I haven't real;y had a problem buying shoes online, and every pair I've bought in the past six or seven years has been online.

Clothes aren't so bad either if you know your size. I wouldn't buy an expensive suit online or anything, but for just everyday wear, I'll happily shop online rather than fight crowds at a store.

  7. Also, retail stores suck for buying shoes if you don't have tiny feet.
