Melvin's Chicken 'n Waffles, 6301 Shakespeare Road: 2012 7 comments
This is the follow-on operation to Carolina Famous Hotdogs & Wings (though curiously, Ihave that one at 6303 Shakeespeare), and was one of a number of Chicken & Waffle restaurants opening in Columbia last year. That's certainly a trend that seemed to come out of nowhere for me. I'd gone my whole life without hearing about that particular food combination, and suddenly I seemed to hear about it a couple of times a week. It almost sounds like a punchline. "Why did the chicken cross the road? To get a waffle.."

The first one I heard of was "Kiki's Chicken and Waffles" in Fortune Square on Two Notch. It replaced a former Indian restaurant last year. Then, one of the Big Potato Chip companies recently rolled out a "Chicken and Waffles" potato chip.

Chicken and waffles is delicious. If anything, it surprised me that Columbia didn't have a place to get them until recently.

I saw a spot on one of those restaurant/food/travel shows on cable TV (can't remember which one, but one of the better ones) recently that showed what claimed to be the first chicken and waffles place (apparently pretty famous now) in Los Angeles, opened way before 1997. Can't remember the name of it (I see a trend here regarding my memory, LOL).

If anyone gets a chance to go by Kroger this Friday between 4 and 8 (I think) you can get free samples of Lay's new artisan potato chips. What does this have to do with Chicken and Waffles, you ask? That's one of the flavors they will be handing out!!!!

Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles in Los Angeles is where it all started. It opened backed in the 70's. I've eaten at their Hollywood location and it was great!

Ted, Chicken and Waffles, it's like that line, "it's a black thing, you wouldn't understand." lol
Gladys Knight (of Gladys Knight and the Pips) opened up Gladys & Ron's Chicken and Waffles in Atlanta back in 1997. The word slowly got around and only now is it trending outside of Atlanta.
