Desserts & More Bakery Cafe, 4611 Hardscrabble Road Suite 101: Mid-January 2013 8 comments
I get out to this part of the metro area very rarely as it's quite a pain to make it there from Forest Acres, or indeed from practically anywhere not in the neighboorhood. I did notice this little dessert cafe in the Publix shopping center some time ago when I was on Hardscrabble checking for another closing, and I recall thinking that it was a shame I had just had lunch. I think the little gazabo might have worked better on the rear of the shop, away from the heavy traffic in front, but still, it would have been nice to sit out in the Spring and watch the world go by.

UPDATE 28 August 2020: Changing address in post title to "Hardscrabble" rather than "Hard Scrabble". Adding map icon, updating tags.

I do not know the leasing rates in the area but I imagine $1,500 every month for this location. That requires a large number of small-revenue generating sales and I just don't see the walk in traffic meeting those needs. Unfortunately some one probably lost a chunk of their life savings in this venture.

I shop at this Publix... never saw a soul out on the little gazebo. I never made it into this version of the shop, (I had been in there a few times when it was an international lunch place) since it seemed to be a coffee place and I don't drink coffee. When it first opened, I thought it was a church as there only seemed to be people there on Sunday.

Here's an article about this shop and the church that was based there.

I used to work here and I was often the only one that ate on that sad little porch. I was a line cook promoted to cake decorator. Anyway, this place was dismal and highly unsanitary. Be glad it closed. I was constantly in shock at what went on in the kitchen - from bloody ground beef contaminating the refrigerator to the mother/owner licking her fingers while frosting cakes to the dishwasher/husband of another owner sneezing directly over prepared food to the staggering amount of customers claiming to have found hair in their food, etc., etc. The owners knew NOTHING about owning and operating a restaurant and were constantly insulting the customers, cutting costs by sacrificing quality and cutting my hours to save money when I was barely scraping by. You didn't miss anything!

Right, so, hopefully Ted can delete that, and in the meantime I am never posting anything from my phone again. Had a whole comment typed up and then somehow that's what gets posted.
Anyway, this is about to find new life, as...a mattress store. Carolina Mattress & Furniture, according to the "coming soon" sign. To be fair, we don't have a mattress store within five miles of here, so clearly that was a wrong that will soon be righted.

Never ate here but bad experience nonetheless. My car battery died in the parking lot in front of the store and my cell phone battery was dead as well. I went in asking if I could use the store phone to make a phone call and the owner informed me that he could not allow me to make a 5 min phone call for assistance!

That didn't take long. Carolina Mattress is gone.

The problem I think stems from the fact that Hard Scrabble Road handles double the traffic it's designed for (as of 2005) and it could easily be like 2015 before the widening commences though it should have started before now...
