Kenny Rogers Roasters, 151 Harbison Boulevard: mid 1990s   9 comments

I never really associated Kenny Rogers with food (well, except maybe "four hungry children & a crop in the field"..), but according to my sister, the chicken at his Kenny Rogers Roasters restaurants was excellent. And, in fact, from what I can tell from this Wikipedia article, there was a Seinfeld episode based around that fact.

The article is quite vague about what happened to the chain. At one point they were doing well, having just bought out a troublesome competitor and gone public with over 1000 restaurants, and a few sentences later they are in Chapter 11. Today, apparently almost all the stores are in Asia.

The Chapter 11 came in 1998, but the Harbison store was already a Bojangles at that point, so I'm just leaving the closing date as mid 1990s.

You've got to know when to fold 'em..

  1. I worked at Roasters during the time when they were really growing in south Florida. They made one amazingly stupid mistake. NO Advertising. They made something like 4 commercials but never aired them and boston market oversaturated the area with advertising and just took over. Roasters chicken is by far better then boston market but you only knew about Roasters if you were in their immediate area.

  3. There was a location I believe in front of where the Home Depot is on Two Notch rd along with a Tomato Rumbas which is long gone as well. I want to say that Kenny Roger's Roasters was either in the building where the Outback now occupies.

  4. Man, I hadn't thought of this place in years. I remember when my parents were 'addicted' to TNN (The Nashville Network for you kids, now SPIKE) and they used to run ads for Roasters. Never had a chance to try the place.

I do wish Boston Market would move into the Columbia area. It would be better that some of the chains moving in.

  6. Homer, Boston Market was in Columbia for a little while, wasn't it?

That link that Kc posted is hilarious. Seinfeld's writer couldn't have come with something that wacky!

Jerry: You wouldn't eat broccoli if it was smothered in barbecue sauce!
Newman: 'Gag' Vile weed! A shot of honey mustard, barkeep!

  8. Boston Market is one of my very least favorite places. I recall when I was visiting our DC office (I think it was DC..) the guys wanted to go there for lunch, and literally the only thing I could find on the menu that I would eat was corn on the cob.
