The Blue Martini, 808-G Lady Street, 24 Feb 2011   5 comments

The Blue Martini was tucked away down an alley off of Lady Street, and I was totally unaware that it existed. In fact, when I first saw the news from commenter Summer, I read it as The Blue Marlin, and maintained that mistaken impression through what was for me a confusing article in The State. I had never suspected The Blue Marlin was a jazz club! :-)

The space is not vacant though. Legendary Columbia DJ Woody Windham has opened a new club called, naturally enough I suppose, The Woody in the spot. It certainly is a more intimate venu than one of his other ventures..

  1. My parents are big fans of Woody's. I was worried that Woody ran them off but after reading The State article linked, I realized that the owner had a catering business that was more demanding and decided to sell it off.

It reminds me of when Custom Pizza sold their operation off to Little Caesars in December 2007.

  2. The Blue Martini used to be a different place, it was called Puff the Magic. Prior to that it was called Greco's something or other.

When it was Greco's it was a magic bar. As in, Greco was a magician, so he did shows there and entertained audiences. When he got tired of that, they remodeled and made it into Puff the Magic and it was a Cigar Bar. Greco was still the owner.

Interestingly enough, Greco opened a kiosk in Columbia Place Mall (the big mall on Two Notch in case I got the name wrong) and sold cigars there. It only lasted a few months.

Puff the Magic lasted a few years.

  3. It was confusing having Blue Marlin, Blue Martini, and Blue all three within a stone's throw of each other.

  5. There was a bar called the Encore in this same spot. Either in 1999 or early 2000. The club was on the northside and used that same alleyway and patio. The interior of the building was being worked on (drywall exposed, dusty hall.)
