Charlie's Wings, 2652 Decker Boulevard: 2021   5 comments

There is some confusion on the street address of this former Taco Bell on Decker. It was apparently previously listed as 2632 (and I have pictures with that address posted in the window), but is now 2652.

Charlie's Wings was the follow-on in this spot to Feel Goods. I'm not exactly sure when they closed. The last post on their Facebook page is from 2019, but they have Yelp reviews into 2021, so I'm going to put that in the post title.

The reason that I noticed Charlie's was gone is that a new operation is now open in the space, a "Korean style Chicken" restaurant: 92 Chicken.

  1. Been wanting to post about how incredible 92 Chicken is, and it was obviously a revamped Taco Bell, but never got around to it. It is fantastic! Very reasonably priced as opposed to Bojangles, and the chicken tenders are nice sized a very tender, very much unlike Bojangles. Some are incredibly spicy, some not so, but all the flavors we’ve tried are flavorful. Please try it so it’s never listed on this page! It might even turn Ted to enjoy chicken!!!

  2. I ave never understood why restaurants move into "death spots" where most all prior establishments have short runs. Is it an ego thing, where new tenants believe they will be successful where others have continuously failed?

  3. I cannot believe there is still a lender in Columbia willing to take obvious losses for loans in those locations.

  4. PalmettoPanic and Joe - My guess is that some people don't go through a lender - maybe they had savings or a family member invested. They settle for buying a location with a bad track record and are hoping to be different.

I've heard of people getting caught up in MLM schemes and investing hundreds or thousands from their savings, believing that they will earn a high salary from selling essential oils or whatever.

  5. I remember when Crab Shak was getting ready to open in Dutch Square's food court a few years back (and a couple of others did around that time as well (Mano's Express & Chef T Takeout IIRC)) that they were hoping to try to breathe new life into Dutch Square and I sought to absorb some of the optimism that they were seeking to convey on some news reports I remember being done on it that they were going to breathe new life into Dutch Square's food court. Then they lasted for a while but inevitably they all ended up folding and so I wonder if it's someone with an entrepreneurial spirit that seeks to breathe new life into these corridors only for them to inevitably lack the staying power...I've also heard that a good percentage of restaurants only last less than 2-3 years anyway and so all of that likely plays a role as well.
