Shopping center St Andrews Center (the former Clusters of Whitehall) suffered a fire during the night of 16 January 2023. I have not seen any update on the cause, but the initial reports were fairly sketchy. Here is one from The State with a picture of the blaze in progress.

Looking at the buildings on 21 January, it appeared to me that the damage was mostly confined to the west building, on the side that fronts Bush River Road. Basically that comes down to two businesses, a night club, Sugar Daddy's Jazz Cafe / Red Beans & Rize Jazz Cafe and a hair salon, Hair Power. The next storefront away from those two is a church, which was reported by commenter Gypsie as planning to go ahead with their next service as scheduled.

(Hat tip to commenter Homer)

UPDATE 8 February 2023 -- It looks like the smoke damage to the church was worse than they thought at first, and they are currently meeting at another location:

  1. Any old timers remember this place from years ago? In the mid 80’s I remember frequenting a skate Board shop in this building.

  4. Homer, people don't choose what year they are born in. I don't think you should be upset over someone not happening to remember a store that you remember.

  5. Yes, I remember the Winn-Dixie because it was one of the last places you could return bottles for the deposit money. That was 1973.

  8. Yes, Ollie's is still open. They were not affected by the fire.

Calvary ended up having the first service after the fire at Steve's Deli and I believe the most recent one was held there as well. I know the most recent youth group met at Crossroads Church. The fire clean up at the church is still ongoing.

  9. @JohnR - I used to work at the Winn Dixie during that era. First high school job. I hated returnable bottles....lol. We would draw straws to so who was cursed with the task of sorting them and crating them for return to the bottler....

  10. Homer, I drove a Coke truck as a summer job in 1972 and the most time consuming part of the job was sorting the Coke and Pepsi bottles in the crates. Not my favorite job, but it paid $90 a week.
