Chick-Fil-A, 294 Harbison Boulevard: 19 May 2022 (Temporary) 12 comments
The Harbison Chick-Fil-A is getting the remodeling treatment that several locations in the area have gone through. In this case, that involves a complete razing of the existing building (already done) and rebuilding on the same lot. The State has the details:
In 2021, the Columbia Planning Commission approved the demolition and reconstruction of the Chick-fil-A at 294 Harbison. Documents filed with the Planning Commission indicated the original 3,844-square-foot restaurant building on the site would be demolished to make way for a 4,345-square-foot building. There also would be a new multi-lane drive-thru on the property, no doubt a key addition at a site where customer car lines can be long in the popular shopping district.
If all goes well, they plan to re-open this fall.

@Robert. You're exactly right. I don't understand their plan, when they could have bought a chunk of the former Toys R Us parking lot and built a new restaurant with plenty of space for a multi-lane drive thru and inside dining. They could have kept the old location open while bulking the new one. There are other options, but that was one that came to mind.
Coincidentally, the Rooms to Go parking lot has a parcel carved out and for sale. That would have worked great for them.

Panera and Viva Chicken are going in the Rooms to Go Parking lot. Perhaps there is another parcel being sold as well.

@Larry, so is Panera moving from the current location on Bower?

I think it's possible that Chick-fil-A looked at sites such as the ones Eddie in Irmo mentioned as possibilities but a lot of the details isn't something companies discuss publicly.
My biggest issue with this intersection is the way that Park Terrace Drive and Columbiana Drive are too close together and until some major overhaul is conducted, I don't see it getting better...

@ted - I assume that will be the end result but Panera offered no comment in the article I read. I would have to think the main reason for moving will be to add a drive thru option.

I do remember Panera building on an outpartcel at 5412 Sunset Blvd in Lexington and having a drive thru so I wouldn't be surprised if they have something similar in mind for this location...

I should clarify that the 5412 Sunset Blvd address corresponds to the Lowe's Home Improvement Store in Lexington as it was an outparcel in said Lowe's.

Chick FilA has closed its Decker location, which will reopen at the new site at Two Notch & I-20 on 8/4. They'll get more out-of-towner freeway traffic, but many of us locals avoid Two Notch if at all possible, so.... we'll see how it does. Hopefully the traffic flow is designed well enough to offset the normal Two Notch issues.

Pushing the building back from the road And making it bigger won’t change the real problems; lack of drive thru space and the traffic at that intersection is insane. They should had built a newer, better one with more space off of harbison. McDonald’s moved twenty feet down harbison blvd, chick fil a could too
