Food Lion Store No 185, 6169 Saint Andrews Road: 19 February 2010   22 comments

Here's another closed Food Lion to go with the ones on Two Notch Road, Taylor Street and Airport Boulevard. This Loopnet picture shows the store in happier times.

The story on the WLTX site, calls the store underperforming and gives 19 Feb as an upper bound on the closing date.

I had never been in this Food Lion, but I suspect it was an older store, which would have been up against a newer Bi Lo in the same general area. The newer Food Lion stores are actually quite nice -- I stopped at the one off the Ballentine I-26 exit the other day when I was looking for The Whale's Tail and it was very upscale.

Even after the Seven Oaks Shopping Center closing, there is still a Food Lion on Saint Andrews Road. It's on past the former Clusters of Whitehall towards I-26, in front of the discount cinema.

  1. Wasn't me, ted. Only closing I pointed out recently was Golden City on Charleston HWY.

  3. This store started out as a Big Star, so it has been there for a long time. They had recently, a year or so ago, remodeled, but it does not share the "upscale" look like the one on the Peak Exit. Still, a Food Lion is a Food Lion, no matter what shade of paint you use and whatever murals you paint on the wall. They apparently have a demographic, though. I thought the one on Broad River across from Publix would have closed years ago, and somehow the Ballentine location stays open. They are a large size convenience store. I use them for ice, cokes, and lime juice.

  4. Have you posted about the one on Clemson Rd that closed when the new one on Hardscrabble opened?

  6. Last year, Food Lion went on a blitz to renovate all their area stores and somehow this one didn't get touched...so in hindsight this was the first sign that something was up with it. Several I've spoken with understand why...

This Food Lion expanded and renovated ~2000 when the Eckerd that was next door moved out across the street. The entire shopping center got a facelift during that time. It for some reason didn't get touched during the most recent renovations last year that every other area Food Lion got and this probably explains why.

  7. I thought my dad said it had been remodeled, but looking at those pictures, it certainly does not appear to have been done, and if so, not like the others. That does explain it.

  8. I remember this being remodeled in late 99. I worked at the library next door for many years. I stopped in several days a week. It was always clean and very spacious. Sad to see they didn't update again when they started redoing all the Food Lions in town.

  9. I was riding home from taking a neighbor out to vote and to lunch and noticed a tarp that looked like something is about to move in but I don't know what...will have to keep an eye out and if I figure anything else out, I'll say so...

  10. UPDATE: My mom and I went out on a different errand during which I found out that a portion of this former Food Lion will be a Big Lots. However, according to the official lease plan (Courtesy of Dial, Dunlap, and Edwards), there will still be a 13,198 ft² space for someone else to move in

  14. this new Big Lots is now listed under Big Lots's store location site but it says the grand opening will be October 8...so those of us in the Irmo/St. Andrews area will need to hang in there for another week but be prepared to enjoy all Big Lots has to offer (I know my mom has been wanting a Big Lots out here for several years). I had hoped Big Lots would have opened at 4350 St. Andrews Road but along came Pivotal Fitness but then this comes along several years later...

  18. I am sure this has been mentioned other places on this blog but the other Food Lion on St. Andrews, near the former dollar movies, is going out of business. They are currently running a 50% off sale.

  19. Homer asked about Tony's Party Shop that was next door to this and I've found out that years of chain smoking as well as indulgence in booze caught up to Tony as such as he has recently died and so the shop died with him.

I have visions of the wall being knocked out and something in the 15-25K square foot range built next to Big Lots #5123 (There is already a 13,198 square foot space vacant* with the building as it is currently) but only time will tell what becomes of this spot.

    * Here's the kicker. In August 1997 or 98 (one of the two) Eckerd moved out into their current spot at 6118 St. Andrews Road (to be rebranded as Rite Aid as part of a company buyout in 2007). After Eckerd moved out, Food Lion expanded into their old space (and Seven Oaks Shoping Center's façade was renovated into its current form). After Big Lots took over Food Lion's former space, they left a vacant space on the opposite side comparable in size to what Eckerd had originally. I'd love to sit here and figure out how it's going to work out for that space but I lack that type of vision.

  20. @Andrew - I'm sorry to hear about Tony. Any idea when he passed? The last time I was in there he was in really bad shape and the shelves were practically bare. But, like I said in the earlier post, I was told they were just waiting on a truck to come in.

  21. So NAPA has moved next door to Big Lots but next door to where NAPA used to be across the street is a Meineke that has recently closed...

  22. I remember shopping there when that store was a Big Star. I also remember shopping at that Food Lion the day it opened. I played Galaga for the first time there. They had 2 or 3 arcade games in the front of the store when they opened, if I remember correctly.

I also remember my mom shopping at that Hallmark there as well. I remember that store literally reeking of wax from all the candles they had. Does anybody happen to remember a store in that shopping center called The Counted Thread? I was going through some things in my parents attic a few weeks ago and found an old bag from that store in their attic. I seem to remember my mom going there a LOT when I was a kid since she was into cross stitching. But I'm pretty sure it didn't survive too long after we left Columbia in 1982.
