Kmart, 748 West Main Street (Lexington): December 2019 11 comments
This is certainly not a surprise at this point. In fact, I am more surprised that this store (and the West Columbia one) have stayed open as long as this.
The State says the plan is to close in December, but I don't see how you can get through October and November without already being down to the bare walls. That said, as of Saturday, the store was not too picked over yet, though reflecting that fact the discounts were still fairly low.
You can definitely see the effects of wear and tear on this store in the floor and in other other aspects of the physical plant. Plainly there hasn't been any money for cosmetic maintenence in a good while.
(Hat tip to lots of folks, perhaps commenter Tom was first)

K-Mart was there own worst enemy..they're "hey-day" was in the early 60's through the 70's sometime before Walmart came along and killed them with their retail tactics.. Kmart has now become a thing of the past and a reminder of what was.

Yes, I recall the first Wal-Marts opening in the Columbia area around 1990, and between them and Target the K-Marts were crushed. I'm surprised any of them lasted into the 2010s.

I thought the first Walmart opened in 1985 over on Garners Ferry Rd. at that shopping center right behind McDonalds at Atlas Rd. But I could be wrong.

You are probably right. Growing up and spending most of my time in Saint Andrews, I was not as connected to the inner Columbia/Lexington County areas, so my memory might be faulty. I was basing that mostly on my recollection that the Harbison Wal-Mart opened around 1990, and I remember it being a big deal at the time.

I know that the West Columbia Walmart opened up about the same time, or could have been around 1990..I dont remember though. I'm curious as to what happened to that old Farm House that sat on the property for many years. I know who it belonged to, or at least knew of the family it belonged to since I lived near that side of town in the early to late 60's.

I remember the Walmarts opening around the late 80's. I'm thinking Del is probably right about it being around 85.

Folks, after a 33 year run as Kmart # 7616 (November 12, 1986 to December 2019) and sitting vacant for 3 (going on 4) years, it is apparent to me that there is some interior construction of some type going on (stay tuned)…

K-Mart used to have good shoes before the late 2000s or so. I would go there just for the shoes.

Holy crap that store is still around? I might go there just to see if they have something I'd wanna to buy.
